Title: Art Deco vases unknown maker
Post by: msiscoe on December 01, 2009, 07:59:36 AM
Hello,

Can anyone help identify these vases. I have seen them sold as Lalique, Sabino, and Verlys.

Here's the link:

Hi,

These vases are Czech, Libochovice to be precise, pattern number 1584, as seen on page 30 of the Libochovice catalogue, on the CDR, which accompanies Marcus Newhall's book: Sklo Union: Art Before Industry.
The birds at the base were probably modelled by Karel Zentner.

Hello,

Thank you for the information. I am going to have to purchase that book.

Thank you again!

There is also another possibility since the seller's location is in the US. New Martinsville (New Martinsville WV) made an identical vase from 1934-37. Attached is an ad from 1934 & while the quality of the ad is obviously not perfect it show the NM vase. New Martinsville & Paden City glass companies both produced items in the 1930's that are identical to several Czech items produced during that time period, however some of the Czech items are signed & thats the only way to tell them apart. I've just seen the same vase in PK 2003-3-3 with the following description:

Quote
Vase mit zwei Tauben
Sammlung Stopfer, farbl. Pressglas H24,5cm, D 18,7cm
im Boden eingepresst "TCHECOSLOVAQUIE"
1930-er Jahre
s.a. Sellner 1986, Abb.233, Sammlung Reidel
H25,8cm, B 16,5cm, farbloses Pressglas

which Google tells me means
Quote
Vase with two doves
Collection Stopfer, colorless pressed glass H24, 5cm, D 18.7 cm
pressed into the ground, "TCHECOSLOVAQUIE"
1930s
s.a. Sellner 1986, Abb.233, Reidel Collection
H25, 8 cm, W 16.5 cm, colorless pressed glass

I understand that the collection shows items from the Stopfer Collection but I'm flummoxed by the reference to Reidel. Can anyone enlighten me please?

:hi: Anne, Reidel is not Riedel. Have a look  here  (http://www.auctions-fischer.de/press/auction-previews/kissed-by-leisure-the-reidel-glass-collection.html?L=1)

Ahhhhh thank you Pamela, that explains things nicely. I'm never sure when I see a different spelling if it's just a mistake or a different outfit, and my German is (as you know!) non-existent without Google's aid. So the Reidel referred to is a family of collectors also, and not the glassmaking concern Riedel. (Explaining here just in case the linked page disappears at some time.)

So the vase is still Libochovice or New Martinsville. Which is what we needed to know. :)

It's not so simple: I own the same one than the New Martinsville's : http://www.flickr.com/photos/glassholic/6323380111/in/photostream but with "made in France" molded !  :o

Now that's interesting, as I seem to recall Pamela saying that some glassware produced in Czechoslovakia has been found with Made in France or Made in Belgium markings... perhaps this is another example?

Perhaps, as my Luxor vase is "made in Belgium" but usually known as a "Walther and Sohne" vase

Here's a photo of my topaz coloured marked SPIP France, height 25 cms and a smaller green, unmarked, height 15.8 cms, possibly Libochovice ( the non-uranium colour is right for them)

The  'Brockwitz'ish' 6924  (http://www.glas-musterbuch.de/Brockwitz-1941.86+B6YmFja1BJRD04NiZwcm9kdWN0SUQ9Mzc1OSZwaWRfcHJvZHVjdD04NiZkZXRhaWw9.0.html) in the back right is marked Belgium also - another mystery  ::)
