Title: My Glass Artists List
Post by: Mike Morgan on March 27, 2008, 10:42:29 AM
As more and more unusual weights seem to find me, I've started a list of glass artists. When I can ID part of a signature or have initials, I check them against the list as a starting point for leads. It is by no means comprehensive, and I don't know that everyone listed does paperweights... but it's a start.

If you have names that should be in this list, but aren't, please post them (with how signed, if known) in a reply so I can add them to my list.

Gee, didn't know I was famous!

I consider myself a hobby artist and don't sell my glass very much.  However, you may have ended up with a marble or dichroic paperweight that I marketed several years ago.  I usually sign my work with an LT with the letters linked together (bottom leg of the "L" forms the top leg of the "T").  Hope that helps and you didn't end up with too cheesy a paperweight from me.

Regards,
Larry

Personally, I'm interested in paperweights, and my use of the list is to try finding leads in identifying signed/marked weights. That certainly doesn't preclude anyone from parsing this list into their larger list of general glass artists.

Larry, yup, you're famous! Maybe you'll get star treatment at restaurant and such. Unfortunately, I don't own something from everyone on the list. If only! These are names I've picked up from various online sites such as the left-column artists menu on the modern paperweights page at theglassgallery.com. Many marble artists, I think, made their way on the list 1) because the line between marble and paperweight is a little fuzzy sometimes, and 2) several paperweight artists I really (really, really) like, such as Josh Simpson and James Alloway are well-known -- or even better known -- as marble artists.

Incidentally and an incredible longshot -- the description of your mark doesn't match, but the initials could -- have you looked at my post titled something like "A Couple Interesting Weights"

Mine all made/make paperweights (and other stuff). Are paperweights defined as round(ish) or can they have shapes - say apples or animals?

Perhaps when we're bored with creating a list, we could start on a 10-20 word description of each person's/studio's type of output - make it into a real database

Dates would help too. Ranges if possible but start with years known. Main problem is you really need a moderator to manage such a list in the first post as straggling through a thread can be difficult.

Well done for the time and effort in creating such a list.

Quote
Personally, I'm interested in paperweights, and my use of the list is to try finding leads in identifying signed/marked weights.
I would recommend Andy Dohan's Dictionary of Paperweight Signature Canes (latest version on CD - as covered in a message in the Market Place (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,16644.0.html) ) Andy's CD covers over 360 names, companies etc., has 1650 colour images and links the actual signatures with over 360 makers. That goes a long way to sorting out the list of possibles for almost all known paperweight makers - and in the CD version, lots of bead makers are listed, too, so that helps to separate the different categories.

Your list has 447 entries which shows that you have included over 80 names that are not in Andy's CD book and may, therefore be unconnected with paperweights / marbles. There are also names in Andy's CD book that are not in your list, including the famous people from the start of paperweight making in Murano as well as some names from more modern times in Murano.

Frank mentioned some of the factors that might be needed to help maintain and use such a list. I would suggest that country would be useful, too. Are you including names on labels in the same way as signatures? As just one example, "Scotia of Scotland" is mentioned, but that was (I think) just a trading name used by William Manson at one time. So perhaps there should be some form of link between "Manson" and "Scotia" within the list, otherwise, people new to paperweights might think that they are separate makers. That sort of linking would apply to many of the names but it would also start to make the full list quite complex, hence, as Frank says, a need for some type of moderating would be required.

Here is a list of mainly British glass artists working in the UK at some time over the last 30 years, most of whom it has been my pleasure and privilege to know at some point in my career.

Hi Mike, fabulous list! Every time I happen apron a signature I find myself here. It'd be fantastic to have dates and info also. I don't know if this threads still going, I see it's 11yrs old now, but I've come across a signature not on any of the lists. It's P. Swan scratched on the base of a flatfish shaped Paperweight. I wondered if you'd heard of them?
