Glass / Re: American glass artist, signed "Bar"? Who is/was this?
« Last post by kwqd on Today at 01:54:43 PM »
I suspect a small studio maker.  Not necessarily from the USA as they normally sign at the base of the sides.

Ross

Thanks for your comments, Ross. I have a large American studio glass collection, so I checked through it and found most were signed on the bottom, by a factor of almost exactly two to one. I was surprised to find so many signed on the side, though.  I have quite a few unidentified signed pieces, signed both ways.

I agree that it is probably a small studio maker, wherever it was made.

Hi, forgot to measure my bowl but it's smaller. Will have to measure it. Have looked at quite a few of these but not found a match for the shape. Still you could be right on the designer.
Thanks for your help,
Keith

Paul S. always recommended getting the revised and expanded edition from 1981 (not the 1970 first edition).

Anton, if you would like a picture from the book you are welcome to message me. The Phelps Warren book is a good book on early cut table glass and worth getting a copy.

Glass / Re: Unrecorded? Mark on pressed glass compote c.1840

This could be a complete misdirection however there is information here on Pressglas Korrespondenz regarding Russian examples of Launay Hautin glass:

https://pressglas-korrespondenz.de/archiv/pdf/pk-2008-2w-00.pdf

These have different markings on the base to that on yours.  However I was just wondering if perhaps yours might not be H & V but perhaps Cyrillic?  I couldn't see the mark on yours very well though so this suggestion could be way off course.(Edit - I've looked again and got my straight eyes on and I can see the mark now so my comments are possibly not relevant - it does look like H&V to me but that doesn't ring any bells.  Apologies)

That said, your pattern looks very similar to that in the Launay Hautin catalogue.  Perhaps it was later produced piece not in those catalogues?  or an earlier piece? For example I have a piece not in the catalogues (1840 or 1841) however it is thought to be an 1830s piece from probably Saint Louis.

Lustrousstone: ScotlandsGlass is not broken, but does have technical problems - it is slow and frequently times out ☹ …one just has to keep trying.

Seanynicks: What would you expect? The site includes images, to help you identify the item, includes information like the official name, year of first issue, whether a limited design, and the name of the designer … in the case of Pyramids Caithness didn't list an individual, just the "Design Studio".

https://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=22&category_id=17&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=6 will go directly to one of several colour variations (unless the server decides to time out).

Glass Paperweights / Re: Identification of Caithness paperweight

Looks like a "Coral" (orange version), first issued in 1972 - but it was classified as second and used to practise engraving - also in order to make sure it would not be taken for a "production item". It should be marked "CIIG" or "C2G" on the base, and was usually sold in the factory shop.
