I wonder if anyone has come across these before? They are small sized brandy balloon shaped glasses - the balloon is an amber-coloured glass but the stem and foot are made of what looks like walnut wood. They came on a walnut musical box bottle stand which plays a tune (Lara's Theme from Dr Zhivago) when the bottle/decanter is removed from the centre. There was no decanter with the set so I don't know if this is lost or if one wasn't supplied. On the bottom of the stand is a sticker bearing the name Reuge and the tune details.
I know Reuge are one of the big musical box movement makers and have looked them up already (I have a few musical movements in different items) but I don't know who produced these sets or the glass/wood brandy balloons. There's a similar style stand (with applied decals which mine doesn't have) on eBay at the moment (with a mixture of clear glasses but they don't have wooden stems) but no clue as to its origins.
It's the wooden stemmed glasses that interest me more than anything. I've seen drinking vessels with metal stems before but not wooden ones, so am curious (again!) as to how common they were.

All I can add is that a friend in Australia has a pair of iridised glasses that have teak stems. I once had a photo of them but can't find it now (I'll keep looking). Most unusual and I have never seen any others. I seem to recall several of us thought they may be German (but I can't recall why).

11 years down the line and my hubby found these and insisted on buying them. Is anyone any the wiser? Not sure why they are sideways on?

Hmmm no, we're no wiser yet, Della, but it's interesting to see your glasses. I've just added images of mine as attachments above to save folks having to go off-board to compare them with yours. Between yours and mine we have three styles of teak stems, but the glass all appears the same colour. They strike me as 1960's/1970's style, but searching google images only fetches back a very small number of results of brandies like mine, so maybe they didn't really catch on?

My tummy is screaming Spanish, and olive wood, but I don't really know why. ;D

The wood on yours looks much better quality than mine, Anne. I wouldn't have grumbled at buying yours :P
I agree that they look very 60's/70's in style too.
I have seen a few with olive wood, Sue, but only with clear glass. Not to say that you aren't correct, of course ;) The ones I can find are of today.
One day, we may have an answer, until then I will make Iain use them 8)

Sue I agree entirely, it just whispers 'soy Iberico' especially in the dark amber colour. You often see glass like this combined with wood and with decorative iron chains, cruet sets in Spanish restaurants usually show this combination. Different types of wood are used, olive is the more expensive version, cheap lightweight wood is made to look like olive, but oak is certainly no exception. I vote Spain.

Mine were donated to a charity shop in one of my periodic cupboard clearing blitzes, Della - I had run out of space. Plus they were small brandies and I don't drink brandy! :)
Ivo and Sue, Spanish is interesting as I'd not have thought of Spain at all. I was sort of gazing a bit more northwards, sort of Scandinavian somewhere... but was flummoxed by all the glass I'd seen with teak being either clear or smoke, not amber.
