Title: Venetian Glass Duck With GH Label
Post by: cxgirl on February 09, 2009, 01:22:15 AM
Mod: Important Note. As at 19 May 2020, a thread by Wayne (https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,69609.msg387923.html#msg387923) advises that George Hardy was not the importer of various glass items as has been stated in threads within the GMB. The correct importer name is Hans Geismar.

Hi,
I have this glass duck with the label still intact - from what I can find this is an import label for Geo Hardy around the 1950'. is there anyway to determine who made this piece. The clear glass reacts to a blacklight so does this mean it is cendese glass?
thanks in advance
mary

What do you mean when you say the clear glass reacts to a black light? I suspect the reaction you are seeing is just the decolorant used, probably manganese. This was commonly used in glass formulae worldwide. It can help to indicate that is piece is not relatively new, as manganese often has been displaced by cheaper alternatives, but that's all.

Your duck looks fairly generic, so don't be surprised if you don't find out who.

Looks like a venetian label.  Even though it is not FM....so I thought you might be interested to read this since it does have some pixs there, and comparisons:

By David E: It is worth noting, as Ingela and I have found out, that there are some V.Nason (Murano) pieces that are very similar to FM Konstglas. We are talking shape, design, style and even the internal (sommerso) effects used by both companies.

We came to the conclusion that there could have been some 'cross-pollination' of designs and ideas between the two factories. Many FM pieces are signed (but not all) and most Nason is labelled (only a few are signed). Some pieces have neither mark nor label and can probably only be distinguished by the tools used to pull and pinch the glass, or subtle differences between the sommerso effects.

Not sure if this helps, but I just thought some interesting reading when you can see similarities between Venetian and FM.  God knows, I am still learning... :spls:

I have 2 unsigned ducks; one identified as Cenedese and the other one with a George Hardy sticker - and it looks to me as if they are from the same factory.  I'm sure the brothers Marcolin were not involved...

Hi,
Sorry, I should have said the clear glass glows a yellow/green colour under the blacklight.
Antiquerose thanks for the link - interesting reading. So much to learn.

The yellow green is almost certainly the manganese decolorant used to remove the greenish tint from iron impurities in the sand
