Title: Unusual Millifiori Paperweight - I D Request.
Post by: Otis Orlando on September 18, 2012, 10:20:04 PM
Goodevening all! ;D  Acquired this little beast of a paperweight over the weekend.  Very heavy indeed! Weighing in @ 1kg. Not seen canes like this before. They appear only on the surface.  I also noticed that they appears to be an elongated air pocket within the base of the paperweight.  The only way I was able to recognise this, is by wetting the surface area.  Any ideas?  Oh! measurements: H. 6.8cm, Dia. 9.8cm, Dia. base area approximately 5.5cm. Current areas of research are Murano and Chinese.  It would be interesting to know the period too.

The canes are different, but I saw a very similar construction of weight - canes all over the surface, uncased, just last weekend in the British Hearth Foundation Shop; new goods section; made in China.

Just a word of warning not to automatically assume an Italian attribution on any other weights which may turn up with this construction.  ::)
They were attractive things.

Many thanx for the I.D Nexxo.  I was informed by the owner that it was Murano, but did not want to be presumptuous.  Yeah, I too have seen many paperweights with similar type of design to this, not only in Charity Shops, but antique fairs too!   Paperweights are really getting difficult to I.D, unless skilled in the subject matter.   I have seen many paperweights listed as Murano, but to be fare, some sellers are unaware that they are not.  I always put a question mark if unsure.  Anyway, thanx again for you support.
