Title: Black Pressed/Moulded Glass ID needed

Not truly black when you look up at light you can see a real dark red/blue peeking through.

This is for my friend

Two Compotes in black 5.5" high 8" diameter - hobnail underneath with a ribbed stem and a star cut moulded base

I think they may be English

Adam — I think they are unlikely to be of British manufacture, unless they were specially commissioned for a British factor, wholesaler or retail group.    I prefer a mainland European attribution, but would not be too surprised if they turned out to originate from the USA.

Your best hope of a positive attribution is if they were also made in carnival glass, as dealers and collectors of this style have immense knowledge of C20 unmarked pressed glass.

As for date, it is difficult to help.   All those I have seen have been in good condition, typical of, say, 1930s or post-war pieces.   I have in mind a lovely range of "Victorian" epergnes which I was shown on Murano last year, which were launched on to the English market during the 1950s!

those are ice coupes made by Stiver - one of the largest manufacturer of what they insist here on calling 'injection moulded'glass.

Can you please get a close-up of the pattern?

These look similar to compotes that have been puzzling me for years.  They resemble either Fenton or Westmoreland pieces depending on the pattern but are neither.

I think Ivo may have solved the mystery!

Thanks, Ivo.   It is pleasing to me to know that I was not too far off reality.

I will look at their imaginative attributions on other dealers' stalls with increased amusement.

Hi All,

Black comports similar to these were imported into the UK in the 1910s and 1920s. I cannot remember off the top of my head who did the importing, but the country of origin was America.
