Thought I would make a new topic just for labels, that way we dont have to look around into other topics for references to them... I would like for everyone to participate in this and maybe explain where the label was from, if you have reference to it (year, book, glasshouse), and anything else you think appropriate.
Lets try and have clear photos of intact labels if possible, so everything is readable and we dont get confused. I will post some labels, but hope we get more people to participate, like on the "Favorite Murano Piece" theard!
We can make this a Sticky topic if you guys want. Would like the feedback.
Thanks again!
Javier
UPDATE: Label images can be uploaded to the special album for thisd thread on Glass Gallery: http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/thumbnails.php?album=102

Javier, Without looking through the summerhouse of horrors, here's the only sticker I can find.
http://tinypic.com/67p4zm.jpg
You can blame Ray for this one, it was his first. :D
PS: Sorry I have no idea about Murano stickers, I think I need a bit of help. :(
-
These are the ones I have at this time. I just can't seem to get closer without the picture getting blurry so I had to take them farther out, I hope their ok. The first one is from a Ribbon Canne decanter, the second is from a Cenedese Sommerso decanter and the last one is from Vilca, a fairly new piece with the designers name attached.

Hi Max,
I have those 2 labels on a few pieces, pretty much intact, so I will post them in a bit. Have to find the pieces first.
... and Cathy, Thanks for the pics!

Here is a Venini label. Clear plastic with black print. And, a pic of the piece. Wish we had saved the pics we had of some other labels we had.

I have a big photo library of labels and signatures. Let me know what you want to see and if I have it, I'll post a picture.
It is true that most of the labels one sees are "generic" import labels. They can help pin down era of production, but rarely manufacturer.

Here's the most common of the Archemede Seguso "Made in Italy" labels
and the Seguso label it was most commonly used in conjunction with.
Date from early 1960's through the mid 1970's.

Thanks Javier
Great pics. But in the ones where the maker is named there's not much guessing to be done. Are there any which don't say the name of the maker but which are associated with a particular company ?
Ventian / Murano
Does Venetian necessarily mean Murano ?
With the Barbini one you show it would seem so ...unless Barbini has production facilities off Murano ...do they ?
Anyone know anything about the Yellow Scroll label ?
-
Hello Peter,
Most times the labels are worn down and some are just partially there, so I thought it was good to have the actual labels presented here. I have been able to buy many pieces in the past by just seeing what the partial labels look like, their shapes, and recignizing who they are from. I really dont think we should limit ourselves on the labels posted here, as they can help many of us. I'll be posting more labels later on...
On the yellow scroll label, I really do not know it, and havent seen it before. Hope someone else has some info on it for you.

On the alabastre glass, I've also got a great Seguso vase in it pictured below with the same labels as the pheasant. Very Scandinavian in design and most unlike Seguso in shape.

Hi all,
A bit late joining this thread - very busy.
Following are a couple of labels from Barovier & Toso that can be reliably dated to 1973 – these 'weights have a central cane with the date! :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/paperweights/t-barovier-toso01.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/paperweights/barovier-toso01.jpg)

Click either image for more detail. I have more labels that I'll post later.
Javier, it did occur to me that some of these posted images are on TinyPic or PhotoBucket which only have a limited life (these included): could I suggest they are all saved and plonked on someone's server as permanent reminders? I don't mind handling them, if required.
-
Here are a few other interesting labels...
This 2 are from an Avem piece. I really like the silver label, very intricate.
http://www.svazzo.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/avemlabels.jpg
This one came from what I think is a Barovier piece.
http://www.svazzo.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/venicelabel.jpg
And this one, which I believe is an earlier version of the Seguso scalloped label, with an Italic "y." I would very much like to have any info on this one, if someone else knows the time period when it was used.
http://www.svazzo.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/madeitalics.jpg
...........................
DenCill,
Thanks for bringing it to our attention that the images from TinyPic and PhotoBucket have a "limited" life. I will try and gather them together and put a special page later on where they can be looked at.
For now I would really want them to be posted here.
Thanks again!
Javier

Thanks Javier
Those are very interesting.
The silver and green one from Copenahgen shows that some importer / retailers labels can be interesting in themselves and help with provenance if not ID.
Have you come across any plain paper makers labels with just a product number ? or original price on them ? maybe with a company name written in pen ?
-
Found another one - Maestri Vetrai
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/avalonsmile/newshots196-1.jpg)
I'm having difficulty pining down this company.
There was one called
Cappellin, M.V.M. (Maestri Vetrai Muranese Cappellin)
which closed in 1931
Murano Magic says that the trademarks and designs were sold to Gaetano Ceschina
There is what would appear to be the old version of of this company's label here http://www.burchardgalleries.com/auctions/2004/feb2204/01images/l33.htm
Anyone know anything about the modern incarnation of this company ??
-
Another two labels for consideration, although they do throw up a slight anomoly.
These are what I call 'Clam Dishes' due to the shape and are unusual as they have two ground and polished bases for placing upright or on their side.
Click any photo to enlarge
This first photo shows the three I have:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-clam-labels01.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/clam-labels01.jpg)
The next shows a rather worn, but virtually intact label and is on the blue/amber one to the right. This shows L. Nason as the maker:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-clam-labels02.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/clam-labels02.jpg)
This is on the small green/amber one. The initials are either 'DSV' or 'SDV'. Any help on this would be appreciated.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-clam-labels03.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/clam-labels03.jpg)
I suppose these demonstrate how makers would often copy each others designs, particularly if they proved popular. Unfortunately the red/amber one is not labelled.
I also have several 'V. Nason & C' labels that I will have to post — unfortunately I believe they closed down recently. This is the firm of Vincenzo Nason, who I believe was originally part of the Nason & Moretti group (comprising many members from each family) and probably related to L. Nason. There are other Nason makers; Ermanno being famous for his modernistic glass sculptures in the 1960s.

... Have you come across any plain paper makers labels with just a product number ? or original price on them ? maybe with a company name written in pen ?
Hi Peter,
Yea I have, some with just numbers written in pen, or typed numbers.
I have 2 or 3 pieces with actual prices, and labels intact, but I packed those up a while ago. They are a Barbini lighter set of 3 pieces, and on the labels underneath they were priced at $6 each in pencil. Which was their original price in the 50's. Unfortunately I never got around to take photos of them. Since they were in Mint condition I decided to packed them back up.
I'll see what other labels I have with written numbers on them and I'll post them. Usually they would be gereric paper labels with just "Made in Italy" on them.

Hi Max,
Here are the labels... I couldnt find the piece that has both of them intact, but this one has the 2 labels in very good shape.
Here is another label, underneath a Seguso "style" fish on pedestal.
Im unsure what the 1st part is, but the last part seems to be "nuova" and "firenze" underneath.
Javier
-
Firenze is Italian for Florence, so I imagine it was made there.
-
Thanks David,
I kind of firgured that one out, but wndered what the first letters in front of "-------nuova" are. Any guess? Im afraid that was the best photo I could take. The green is a bit faded so its also silvery like the letters so its pretty hard to read.
Javier
-
From what I can make out, it reads:
3vigndnuova
'nuova' is new, but the rest doesn't scan. Is that a '3' at the beginning?
But I'm also wondering if the large central 'K' could mean anything significant? Any Florentine glass makers beginning with 'K'?
-
Hi David,
Yea it looks like a 3, maybe a B or a Z? I know in German the Z can look a bit like a 3, but no idea if in Italian it is used the same way. Maybe someone out there knows a bit more Italian or has come across the label. Also have no idea what the "K" is, the gallery logo?

Maybe the mark is Bvigndnuova like Bvlgari (http://store.nordstrom.com/category/boutique0.asp?category=2377897~2383939~2383192&origin=brandslist) One of the hot designers right now (helps to have a teenage fashionista)
-
Hi Javier,
Also have no idea what the "K" is, the gallery logo?
A good point: it could be a Gallery/Dealer label rather than a maker. Doesn't entirely rule it out as being Murano then.
The 'z' character in German normally applies to lower-case only and then has a flat-top. Purely a German character though to the best of my knowledge.
Grayhorse: nice idea - must admit I did think Russian... except for the mention of Firenze, of course  but it is possibly a stylistic character.
For some reason I'm not being informed of all the updates to this board (not just this thread) so I might be a bit late replying.
-
Bvlgari (Bulgari) is an Italian company 8)
Edited to add: I was wrong Bvlgari Perfumes was found in Switzerland in 1993
The point I was trying to make is that a "u" is sometimes written like a "v" for flaire or marketing - gives the illusion of exotic.
-
Yes, I realise that - I was referring to the '3' character from Javier's label looking rather Russian :)

re SDV
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-clam-labels03.jpg)
It could stand for Seguso Dalla Venezia & C. Srl. (1951-65)
re L Nason
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-clam-labels02.jpg)
What a beautiful and fascinating label !!!!
And something of a mystery !!!
From Murano Magic it would seem that the only person this could refer to is Lino Nason "who operated a glass workshop on Muranop in the 1930's".
The only other L.Nason is Leonardo (1830-1900) !!!
An extensive Nason family tree is shown in Murano Magic but Lino does not appear as his relationship to other members of the Nason family is unknown !!!

I thought you only had one ! What have you been hiding from me ???
Thank you so much for this link. I have had such great difficulty finding out about Maestri Vetrai. I had assumed they were a relatively modern firm going by the style of the label or indeedsome kind of commisioning/importing/branding company...but on the contrary it seems they have an illustrious past !!!
I don't really speak Italian buut I can guess some of it from enforced schoolboy Latin .... I admit I never thought that reading about Ceasar's cohorts would ever come in handy.

I'd suggest looking to see what company with a name starting with K was located at no 3 Vigna Nuova in Florence then.

Very much a mystery it would appear! I would definitely think the style was c.1960, which is qualified by the Seguso variant, but do you have any idea how long Lino Nason was operating? This piece looks much later than the 1930s to me, although the label is quite worn. Just to confirm it does state 'Murano' above and 'Venezia' below so it is Muranese, not just Venetian.
From what I can work out on Italian [speaking] sites, he worked from the Barovier & Toso furnaces for 32 years (till 1962)?
I was also aware of the large Nason clan but apart from V.Nason their other pieces seem quite hold to find, Nason & Moretti (http://www.nasonmoretti.it/home.htm) aside.
But if it's Leonardo who made it, I'll eat the clam!
Well done Anne and Peter on Javier's label – could still be a dealer label though.
-
Until recently I had taken "Made in Italy" stickers to mean "NOT Murano" but going by recent submissions here that would not necessarily appear to be the case. Indeed we have examples here of labels which don't mention Murano (only Italy) alongside Murano labels on the same item.
Life gets more complicated.................
-
Javier
Thank you for examples of the number labels. The Seguso one is very nice. I assume these numbers are production numbers.
I have heard these referred to as "etickets"(spell ?). I don't know if this applies to just the plain ones or not..
In Neuwirth's Glas 1950-60 there is a b&w photo of some of these types of labels titled "Ettiketten und Stempel". I'm guessing that "stempel" means the glossy printed type.
One of these has 2 numbers, one preceded with an L, I would guess for Italian Lire (thousands of). Many items shown in the book have the original prices quoted in the notation to the pictures.
-
do you have any idea how long Lino Nason was operating?
No David, that quote + the lack of relationship was pretty much everything in the book about him !!
-
ETIKETT (One t) = label
STEMPEL = Stamp (presumably etched)

Hi Peter,
The particular labels I just posted were taken from known "Murano" pieces.
The 1st one, which is square in shape, was from a Barbini Fazzoletto vase. The 2nd one is from a Barovier Graffitto bird, and the 3rd is from another Seguso Fazzoletto vase. I would not say that "any" label with "Made In Italy" is in fact considered "Murano", spacially if they are newer. So saying that, I would still refer back to the techniques, shapes, and over all style of the piece with such labels before making a decision.
I know, more confusion, lol.
Javier

Frank, thanks for the translation!
ETIKETT (One t) = label
STEMPEL = Stamp (presumably etched)
Hi Peter,
The numbers refer to the style of the item, and sometimes to the item # in production, that is why sometimes they also have letters, and multiple numbers in 1 label. Without a catalogue to refer back to it is hard to say.

More labels:
The first is a uranium green vase 8½" (21.5cm) tall. Strictly speaking I don't think this is Murano, but 'Venetian'. The label (badly ripped) merely states 'Venetian Art [Glass?]' and is situated on the neck. It also has one of the small circular 'Made in Italy' labels on the base. The central portion of this label has a tiny logo that looks like a 'G' with an 'H' in the centre, so either 'G.H' or 'H.G' is the maker?
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-greenvase04.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/greenvase04.jpg) : (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-greenvase05.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/greenvase05.jpg)
The second is a clear plastic label, with gold lettering. On the left side is written vertically 'Murano', with 'Vetreria Artistica' and 'OBALL' to the right. Any clues to the maker?
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-owl01.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/owl01.jpg) : (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-owl02.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/owl02.jpg)
The label is shown twice, as the backlit version shows the lettering clearer.
[edited to correct spelling on label: "Vetreria" with the last 'a' - label not terribly good!]
-
Hi David,
Thanks for the posting. I think the label on the Green Vase is the same as the one CathyG posted (from the Orange and Yellow Sommerso Decanter) on the 1st page, at least looks very similar, so your piece might be Cenedese too... and I have to say that is the cutest OWL I have ever seen, :D
Javier
-
Javier,
Thanks for the info - I didn't have time to scrutinise the earlier postings so am pleased to learn it's a "known" maker. I actually only paid about £5 for it (~ $10) although it does have a small chip on the rim. Good news is I managed to find another on eBay.
As for the owl, I also have his big brother, who was made by V.Nason:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-owl202.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/owl202.jpg) : (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/t-owl203.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/dencill/labels/owl203.jpg)

Hi DenCill,
I dont know, havent seen the label before either. Looks like a current manufacturers label.

I do have another piece with a label but the label is so badly worn that it would not photograph well.
Silver Triangle (pointing up)
with a drawing of a stylized gondola bow covering most of it
and in between the words:
"Italy" centre
"Glass" up left hand side
"Murano" - across the bottom
Its on a sculptural modernist sommerso basket very similar in color and style to a piece shown on the left of page 223 of Pina's Italian Glass, marked as Frattelli Toso.

David, I have a peacock vase made by the Swedish glass company Elme, which has a label with G.H as described by you. I have always believed this to be the U.K. Importer's label, i.e. George Hardy. (check out my label to see if its the same as yours). I have had other pieces in the past with the same GH logo on, and these have included pieces by Aseda Glasbruk. I have also seen the same label on Raymor glass too.
I've just got back from Falmouth, and really missed the GMB, so if I'm proved wrong about George Hardy, then blame it on too much sand, sea and ...

Hi Anne,
Thanks, this is starting to get clearer. The label is identical apart from the wording. Javier reckoned it was a Cenedese vase, so I assume Hardy imported a variety of glass and just used appropriate labels!
-
Hi David. Just checked "Glass Notes" on Great Glass website which states that G.H. were active in 1950s, importing Scandinavian and Murano glassware.
Regards - Anne E.B.
-
Thanks again, Anne - I took a peek myself and it does state 'blue/silver' labels, whereas mine is red/gold. Could be that different colours were used for different countries?
Also nice to date it to around the 1950s.
-
I only have two pieces with their labels still attached:-
The first is a geometric vase - "Christallo - Vetreria - G . Campanella & C."
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y195/glassie/falmouthglass012.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y195/glassie/muranolabels009.jpg
The second, a bowl I am led to believe by Flavio Poli. The gold label is very worn, but the shape is quite distinctive.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y195/glassie/bestpiece002.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y195/glassie/bag001.jpg
-
Anne, your green bowl is definitely not Flavio Poli nor Seguso. I am not even sure if it is Italian, as I've seen both Bohemian and Canadian (Chalet) pieces with this kind of free form shape.
Poli's sommerso work always features very clean lines and simple shapes. I've never seen anything like this from him.
Laura
-
Thanks Laura :) . Its back to the drawing board on that one  Fortunately it wasn't described as such when I bought it, otherwise I would have been well and truly had! However, it is still a fantastic piece of glass and I luuurrrve it. I have seen the exact one described as being by Poli on the net in the past and grasped at the connection. Mustn't believe everything I read
Regards - Anne E.B.
-
Hi Anne,
It is still a lovely piece of glass, so don't feel bad. It is quite possible that it is from the same period, although I suspect it to be a tad later than the 1950s. Have you seen the website dedicated to Chalet glass? It is worth a look. Also, try searching for bohemian glass on ebay, as you will see similar types of items.
Best,
Laura
-
Sorry to go back on this trend, but on the L Nason label shown earlier and subsequent comments, I've always understood that Lino Nason was not a person, but was used for pieces made in a collaboration between Ermanno Nason and the graphic artist Lino Perone from La Spezia in the late 1970's early 1980's.
Paul
-
Hi Paul,
Thanks for this new information and there's not a problem going back; I'm just interested in a correct attribution!
The style of these dishes could be anytime from 1960 to 2000s and what you've provided is most useful. It would also explain why we couldn't find an L. Nason that fitted the profile! :)
I know Ermanno Nason was most famous for his animal sculptures in the 1960s, so it's interesting to learn of this collaboration.
-
Hi,
We found this label on the web and it was given an attribution of Fratelli Toso??? Can anyone confirm that and if it is the period of time it was used?
Javier, you might find this interesting as I saw an angel candleholder with the solid flat base similar to that on your site except this one had the most darling bright red lips! Anyway, just a tiny piece of the label was left. And, it had this blue line and dot border edge. I wasn't aware that Fratelli Toso did any figurines. Wish I had a pic of the one we saw but it isn't ours... at least not yet!
Lenore
Picture gone!
-
Hello Lenore,
I am not sure how I feel about taking photos from other members, maybe on Ebay or somewhere else, and posting them here on the boards to find out info about them.... not to be mean or anything, but just something to think about.
On Fratelli Toso, yes he did figures like every other Italian designer, in one form or another. I really do not think Toso ever used that label.
Javier
-
Ref - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v405/glass47/sticker.jpg - if it helps this label is an import label - the importer is 'G Hardy & Co' who imported Aseda (Sweden), Kosta, etc as well as Murano glass - here is a bit of Aseda on eBay with same label only 'Swedish Art Glass' http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7345553969&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT if you do a bit of homework you can find who Hardy imported for and narrow it down

Three labels below.
The first one says VB Opaline Florence Made in Italy

I haven't a clue what the next two labels say  as they are worn....but I thought I would post them in case they can be identified or maybe help in any way :?:

Ref - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v405/glass47/sticker.jpg - if it helps this label is an import label - the importer is 'G Hardy & Co' who imported Aseda (Sweden), Kosta, etc as well as Murano glass...
David, these labels were discussed earlier, but thanks for expanding on the theme.

Margaret, this looks like the middle of the word FOREIGN to me... there appears to be an N after the bit you are reading as REIO and what looks like an O before it. The O in REIO looks like a G to me zooming in on the image - it has a faint but visible cross bar of a G. Hope this helps. :)
-
Ohhh Anne
I think you are right, it looks like the word foreign and here I was thinking this piece was Murano  :( I have posted a pic of the vase below. It has a totally flat base and stands 10ins high and weighs approx 4lbs.

Javier, It would be an idea to make this topic a sticky so it stays at the top of the forum instead of dropping down out of sight. :)
Also, I've created a Labels album on GlassGallery so that labels we identify can be saved for permanent reference, so if anyone wants to add their labels or marks to it please register in GlassGallery and add them to the album.

Hi Shanbeat & Welcome
The photo is fine but rather big.
Perhaps you could crop it down to just the label for this purpose.
For a free image editor try Picasa2 ...its very easy.
Additionally this label is the subject of debate in another topic.
It's not yet clear if items carrying this label were actually made in Murano.
It's possible that they were made elsewhere in Italy or indeed in Venezuela !

To preserve these images for reference I've saved them and will upload them onto the GlassGallery Labels album over the weekend. Otherwise we will lose the valuable info we have gathered here as the images fall off their respective image hosts, e.g. Tinypic and Photobucket. If anyone objects to having their label image/s held on GlassGallery please let me know as soon as possible and I'll not include them.
-
Hello Anne,
Personaly I do not know how I feel about it.
Where will the labels be put up? I thought if they were going to be saved they were going to be saved on this website, not another website.
I would need a bit more info on this, can you please explain where they are going?

Here's a label that came on a little bird I purchased recently at the Blue Mountain Antique show in Calgary (Oct 14-16 2005) I believe it's contemporary ( take it with a grain of salt, when I was a kid I believed the moon was made of cheese :) )

Hi
I was going to post these in a separate 'my new buys' but think this thread is good and I can add as well as get help on Murano/Italian glass and attached labels
1) Clam form of good quality with controlled bubbles and fantastic gold foil under the surface - label is for 'G Hardy & Co' Venetian glass, but what is this 'Lido'
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/blackcatgla/images/lido1.jpg
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/blackcatgla/images/lido2.jpg label
2) Another item that came with it, starfish in same colour with same bubbles and foil no label
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/blackcatgla/images/ven3.jpg
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/blackcatgla/images/ven4.jpg
3) Small subtle sommerso dish with green label that is worn, I read it as 'Genuine Venetian Glass - Hand Made - Made In Murano - Italy' is this a Seguso label
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/blackcatgla/images/ven1.jpg
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/blackcatgla/images/ven2.jpg label
4) Tall yellow/green vase with opalescent stem - simple square gold label 'Made in Italy'
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/blackcatgla/images/it1.jpg
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/blackcatgla/images/ven5.jpg label
Hope this helps people and I can get some confirmation

Hello David,
On piece #1, CathyG posted a similar label on page 1 of this topic, but it doesnt have the "Lido" on top. DenCill also posted a similar label on page 4, and Anne E.B. posted a good description of where it came from at the bottom of that page.
I think maybe "Lido" was for a particular maker that sold for George Hardy (importers?)?
The #3 piece has a common Venetian Glass label, not a Seguso label.
Javier
Mod: Important Note. As at 19 May 2020, a thread by Wayne (https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,69609.msg387923.html#msg387923) advises that George Hardy was not the importer of various glass items as has been stated in threads within the GMB. The correct importer name is Hans Geismar.
-
Thanks Javier
I thought the shape and colour were wrong for a Seguso label, will have a look at the pages you mention ref the G Hardy/Lido label
I think no 4 is a modern piece, but any idea if Murano? I have noticed a tendency as with my Moretti and some Nason not to put Murano on the 'label', the stemmed vase is of course not of that calibre.
I wonder if that square gold label is an importer label or a company one, if it was anything good I am sure the label would have the maker name on with logo etc.

-
On a separate note - I see KevH posted about a label, 'Vetro Artistico Veneziano - Made in Murano Italy' on page 1
Here is a whole thread with labels and lots of pictures of that glass maker (we actually are at an impasse as to whether it is a maker or importer)

I have this Murano paperweight with a label that has black on silver lettering and the prow design of a gondola. Reads: Made In Italy Murano Glass. It's a beautiful paperweight. The pink canes are especially vivid against the vibrant green glass. I have other Murano weights packed away in a box in a basement room that's going to be professionally decluttered in a week or so. Lots of boxes of books, posters, tools, etc. Can't wait to go through the two boxes that have paperweights. Anyway, here are images of the weight and its label.

The F and T are fused to make that logo.

Thanks so much for your reply Javier. It's a gorgeous paperweight. I'm pleased to know its a Fratelli & Toso. The logo (the fused F & T) IS supposed to look like the prow design on every gondola I saw in Venice, right?

Thanks Della for letting me post this here

V.Nason would appear to have evolved from VNC and Veritable Opaline de Murano, who were in business from 1967. The following label is taken from a vase; note the gold 'N' in the red circle on the left that probably signifies 'Nason'?

Really enjoying the research and debate into Nason and hope that will keep running
Meanwhile I thought I’d post a couple of labels onto this thread – I keep on forgetting what a valuable database it will become. These are both my pieces

A Murano Elephant (medium size) clear glass with aventurine – label ‘Made in Italy Murano Venezia’ don’t know the company or importer but it’s a modern piece

A large 14” Murano Sommerso Vase with canes and aventurine to base, a beautiful item that sold well – label ‘Made in Italy’ – with ‘Murano’ in scripts cutting through label at an angle – label colours gold and green c 1960s

Hi Anne,

No - just an illustration of rose type flowers in a vase/jug.
I've had two or three of these in the past, but this is the first with a label.

Hi,
Not sure if this counts under the murano labels heading, but this label is deteriorating fast and I thought I would take a picture of it before it goes completely. This vase was bought in 1965 (probably from Bath) as a 21st birthday present for a friend of mine. She no longer wanted it and passed it on to me knowing I liked glass. The label reads Montrose Made in Italy. with a picture of a rose. The writing is silver on a red background. It is 33cms (13") tall and has quite deep vertical ribbing inside, although it can be felt very slightly on the outside.
I've hunted unsuccessfully for any information on Montrose, but am asuming it was the name of the distributor or importer.

:D:D:D
Hello, I'm a bit late getting to this thread! I recently found a large long-necked duck, in green and gold, with a sticker on it. The sticker is the same as the third one illustrated in the posting by Jim Sapp, a shield shape in blue, with Murano along the top in silver, then a rectangle of yellow/cream colour, surrounded by silver under it, and a silver bird on the blue under that. I can't tell if there was writing in the rectangle or not. The bottom right hand corner of the label is missing - if it hadn't been for Jim's illustration, I wouldn't have known about the silver bird.
Does anybody know the maker that used this label? Perhaps the fact that it's attached to both fairy lamps and sommerso gold and green ducks might help?
When we get a new camera (I dropped the one we had, bent the zoom lens and it won't work) I will post a picture. Promise.
-
Taken from Murano forum - ref G Hardy Italian label
So these are Italian after all!!
I know, you all knew that anyway, but here is irrefutable proof ref a label.
The vase is 20” in height and has a subtle spiral moulding to it, white twisting stripe.
http://img140.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tallitalianstripe2si.jpg
I have seen loads of these and thought mmmm – but this has a G Hardy label on it, one I have not seen before saying ‘Italian Art Glass’ – not Venetian …
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/2253/label86lu.jpg
My dealer has loads of these in different colours and shapes - he has a decanter (cracked) with a different importers label on – looks like Seguso but without the apostrophes to Italy.
So knowing bit of the G Hardy history I would say this is 1960s / 70s but who by and is it Murano?
Thanks

Perhaps this label was posted previously on one of the links that disappeared. I found it on a 12" bowl with a silver and gold interior design that is about as sad an example of the glass makers art as I have seen in many a moon. The glass if fine, if pedestrian. The painting, shows a decided lack of talent and taste.

Picked up this vase today with a nice sticker. Thought I'd add it to the thread. What I really found interesting about this vase is that is also has a S.S. Kresge sticker on the bottom. S.S. Kresge was a discount store here in the U.S. that later turned into K-Mart stores we have today. I know this vase must be vintage since S.S. Kresge is long gone! Vase stands 7 1/2" high. Sticker reads "GENUINE VENETIAN GLASS MADE IN MURANO ITALY" Cenedese?

I thought you might like to see this dichroic glass bud vase with a Murano sticker. It is approximately 11" (275mm) tall. A pink/lilac colour which turns blue under fluorescent light. The label is a pale gold colour and sadly quite worn.

Hi Anne, I added the label but don't see in on the 05 Murano 101 Labels pages. Did I do something wrong? I see it on the Album list.

Thanks Cathy, it is there. (I wonder if you're viewing a cached version of the page? Try holding down the Shift key and pressing the refresh / reload option in your browser... you should see it then.)
Anyhow, it is here safe and sound:

Hi Cathy, I always thought that the "Genuine Venetian Glass" labels were recent. :o

Pat...I LOVE THAT PIECE!!!
Thanks Cathy, I love it too! I just need to get a better image of it, and also one under under fluorescent light to show the blue colour. Also took a look at your site, yum, I just wish I could win the lottery!
Hi Tigerchips, yes it certainly looks the same label although yours looks more silver than gold, but it is probably the light difference. I wonder when these labels were in use?
Anne,
Thanks for moving the picture of the whole vase from the label album, I'll get the hang of it soon I promise!
-
The fish label is silver but I think the original colour was green. :)
-
Tigerchips...I did look up the history of S.S. Kresge Co. and I found it changed it's name in 1977 to K-mart. So at least I know that much. I guess the vase could have been sold at anytime up to 1977.
Bubbles...Thanks for your reply on the website it's nice to hear.
Anne...I do see it! Thanks...Maybe I should change the caption under the label since the vase could have been sold in the 70's too. How do I change what's under the picture? Do I just delete it and upload it again? And if so how?
-
You should see an edit description button under the image Cathy? If you don't see that then you could e-mail me the new text and I can edit it for you.
-
Hi Cathy,
Paul came up with this info on your retailers label....
If you can locate a former Kresge stock clerk, I have no doubt they will be able to tell you instantly what year that Murano vase was put on sale and the price paid by Kresge. The information is all on the sticker, but in a simple commercial code.
J,J,Newberry, my employer c. 1960, used the words "Palmer John" in which p =1, a=2, etc., and x designated repeat. (The sum of $11.49 translating to PXMN.) When used with the prefix 3 and the suffix 1 or 61, as in 3PXMN61, you could tell the item went on sale in March of 1961, at a cost of $11.49 each, or per dozen for lower priced items.
-
Thanks for the info, but I still can't make heads or tails out of it. It doesn't seem to me, to follow that explanation. Maybe the KW for someone's initials but the rest...I'm not getting. I'm adding a close up of the sticker.
-
I think this thread could do with a clean-up to remove the older chatter and make the info more accessible, but without moving it to the archive so that it continues to grow.
Any objections?
-
YES! Please don't tinker with it Frank until I've rescued the info to go with all the labels in Murano101 album. I won't have time for at least another week!

Rooster Shield Label

-
Javier, your rooster shield is the same label as Jim Sapp posted as found on fairy lamps and which Sue mentioned on her sommerso gold and green duck both earlier in this thread. No-one seems to know who it's from yet but I did notice that Campanella also use a chicken in their more recent-looking labels. Could there be a connection? Two glass firms with chickens may be unusual or are the Muranese especially fond of chickens?
See this label for comparison:

Javier, can these be added to the Murano 101 gallery as well please?
-
Hi Anne,
There is already a sample of these on there, actually 2, on the 1st page and the 2nd page, which is mine also. There are other duplicates on there...
On the first page of the label gallery theres the same "Christallo Vetreria Campanella" label 3 times.
The Geo Hardy Venetian Art Glass label on the first page is good, but theres also the same label on page 2 "Geo Hardy Venetian Art Glass" that you cant read.
"Lavarazione Arte Murano" on the 3rd page is there 2 times.
"Seguso Dalla Venezia Murano" & "SDV Murano" are the same label.

Irice "Made in Italy," on perfume bottle, maybe L. Gaspari for Salviati.
We cant really attach a new topic onto an ongoing thread, so copy and paste is the best I could do.
I think the problem is that you are putting in a "Tittle" for your post, when you just need to reply and leave that section empty. I think that is why its making your replies into new topics.
Javier
-
I posted the Irice on the "yobunny" labels compendium, but somehow didn't get the title "Irice" under the label to help viewers know what they're looking at. Could someone go into it and add the name? If only I have authority to do so, could someone give me detailed step by step instructions?
Thanks,
Charles.
Hi Charles,
I cant change that, but maybe Anne can.
I think since you posted the label, you should be able to go back in and change/add the name to it? Im not so sure. Anne is in charge of the gallery.... Actually I just checked, and on the top of the Glass Gellery pages, on the right, there's a link in Bold Blue, that should help you. It says -

-
I've tried everything, and cannot edit the Irice label Gallery Picture. I suspect the problem lies in the fact that I originally uploaded it without first logging in (in fact, without first registering with GlassGallery -- as opposed to GMB -- if that's possible [???]).
If the moderator could remove it, I will re-post and try to make sure the title gets in. I think titles are helpful for the picture gallery.

Here are some more Venini labels which you can upload to the Gallery if you want.
If you want to try a chronological order I would suggest to do it that way:
Early fifties on a piece of ca. 1952:

Mid fifties to early sixties:

Very interesting and thanks for bringing these up. Please do upload to GlassGallery as this is the support picture archive for everyone to browse.
I've converted the latter images to links in the meantime.

Two more labels added to the gallery:
First just another red Murano label, but a very crisp and clean one, so I added it anyway.
I'm sure I've seen these daisy weights somewhere - I thought Nason at first, I had some signed daisy weights earlier this year, but they are not quite the same. Could be good if we can tie the paperweight down, then we could maybe get a factory for these red labels. But it may just be generic anyway.

Second a Tagliapietra label on a nice transfer paperweight

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing those Lynne. :)

Here's a link to a website I just found that is very helpful for Murano as well as other types of glass. It's probably been posted before, but just in case. . .

Thank you, yes it has been, but it never hurts to add it again. :) Have you visited our Murano101 label collection here yet? http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/thumbnails.php?album=102

Hello, here is a Murano Rooster Label that you can use if you want to. It disapears in 48 hours I think???

Here is a Murano Rooster Label.....Beth

I have added Beth's label to the Lables 101 section of Glass Gallery. Slight variation to the one Svazzo posted a while ago.

Here is a residue of a label on a bowl recently acquired - I have gone all through the labels on the Murano 101 gallery, but all the generic seem to have Murano in the middle, not across the bottom like this one. Seems to say "made in" around the top (I have got DE left) but nothing else remaining.
does it ring any bells with anyone?
-
there's an opaline dresser/bathroom set on ebay presently with a label i don't think i've seen before. does anyone recognize this label or have ideas about possible maker/age? item# 220175174757

Here is a Ferro & Lazzarini label
-
Thanks Sue, great label pic! Did you add it to Murano101 album in GlassGallery as well? If not, may I do so please?
-
  sorry Anne i thought thats where i was, doh!! please add to Murano 101 :-*

You are in Murano101 topic Sue, but we uploaded all the label images to the GlassGallery for reference as well (from before we could add pics as attachments to posts.) Sorry if I confused you - I didn't mean to. :-*

Hi all, Im new here and was lurking threw this thread the other day (not all of it) Anyways I have been hired to sell an estate of lamps, art, and chandeliers(lots of muranos) and here is one label I came across that I didn't see while lurking the other day. I don't want to promote my sales here but I hope to be able to learn from you good people all about this glass. As I don't have a clue about it. But I did learn just by lurking that labels are a good thing... so I hope you won't be offended by dumb questions.
ps there are about 100 lamps, 3-500 pc of art glass, and at least 12 chandeliers all murano glass. mid century, this guy bought it all as an investment from buisnesses that were going under in the late 70s
-
Heres the bare remnants of what seems to have been a round label the silver on red letters Murano can just be read and if anyone knows the maker I would appreciate them letting me know:-)
I uploaded iit to Murano 101 but there doesnt seem to be anything like it as in capitol italics.

Hi:
I didn't see an SVA label on here so thought I'd add one. It's from a heavily ribbed colourless corroso bowl, which also has a clear plastic Saks Fifth Avenue label on it.

While I'm at it, here's what might be a version of a Galliano Ferro label from the bottom of an opalescent bird. I suppose it's "Galliano Ferro?"

I think the bowl I posted the other day and identified as Fratelli Toso by Anita has a label which may be the same as the one above.
I have attached a pic of the label on my bowl which you are welcome to upload to the labels gallery as I didn't see it there. My apologies if it is and I missed it :) And as Anita pointed out, under a magnifying glass and spotlight I can make out IN ITALY in the middle of the label. The word MADE is not identifiable. The IN ITALY is in caps but smaller font than the MURANO GLASS around the outside.

Import Label - Genuine Venetian Glass, Bramor, Made in Murano Italy on red scalloped label. Bramor was/is possibly a import company for glass into Australia back mid 1900's. Saw another label like this on ebay the other day by a sellor in Australia for red/blue geode style bowl. I believe Bramor supplied Murano glass to the better jewellers here in Australia. Bramor pops onto Australian ebay every now and then. ;D
Pic of the label and bowl it is on.

Label - Genuine Hand Made In Italy Arno Arte Toscana in scroll form with a picture of glassworks. Not Murano I know but hopefully it will be ok to post here.
Pic of label and the companion piece as the orange has a chipped rim (my fault).

I've just found our Murano101 labels album on GlassGallery is being quoted as an online reference source for Murano Glass on ehow.com :) http://www.ehow.com/how_5146007_buy-vintage-murano-glass-resale.html
Hi Anne!
I'm new to this wonderful board but far from new to glass (Murano in particular!). Anita can probably attest to this. *smile* I do have one "bone to pick" with the person who wrote the article on ehow.com. While I very much commend her on referencing this site for the Murano 101 labels album, I'm afraid I disagree with her putting Leslie Pina as the top reference/source of information on Murano glass. Quite honestly, there are only two people who I believe are the most reliable references both in the past 20 years and today. They are Marc Heiremans and Rosa Barovier Mentasti. I hate to be critical but Leslie Pina has made too many mistakes in her books and especially the latest one on Archimede Seguso. (Of course, only my opinion, fwiw.)
I truly don't claim to be an expert! But I've been buying, selling and deeply involved in collecting glass going on nearly 30 years now. While my interests range from everyone from our brilliant American Studio glassmasters to the incomparable masters such as Tagliapietra (and so many more), I admit I am a stickler when it comes to authors publishing reference books and not getting their facts correct. No one is perfect, but Pina hasn't done a good enough job to be labelled as the "best refrerence on Murano glass" and other glass as well.
(Sorry for the rant! I do love what y'all are doing here and I hope I can get involved, if you want me around...without "rants" LOL)
Shell :-[

Hi, Shell, and welcome! Leslie Pina did have some trouble with her early Fifties Glass books. It was riddled with errors. I think her Italian Glass Century 20 is an excellent primer for people learning about vintage Murano. I've not noticed any real problems with it. Her later books on Fratelli Toso and Archimede Seguso have a couple of mistakes, but I've not seen any real problem with them. Maybe you can start a thread in the Glass Museum Cafe to talk about the problems with the books. It should be interesting. There may be things that I don't realize are wrong.
-
Just thought I would add a couple of labels on two Murano paperweights . The first you already have a pic of in blue. The second on the base of the fish-cane paperweight is probably from an exporter. Cheers, Mike.
-
I suspect Alfredo Barbini labels are probably covered already but I don't have time to check the whole thread and I won't remember later so I'm just going to throw this one out there with the Swan it was found on :)

Hi everyone :hi:
Indeed this is a topic that is well needed in the industry with so many fake products being produced in China and being sold as genuine Murano. What everyone must be careful of is the fact that there may still be NEW products in the market place that have actually been produced in China but have a Murano or MADE IN ITALY label attached. This may still be the case after the Carbinieri seized over 11 million fake items worth approximately 16 Million USD from Venice in July 2010. The only way you can be sure is know your makers, the styles and techniques used, a bit of history on Murano glass and most of all, purchase from someone who will stand behind what they sell.
This is my 2 cents worth as a lover of Murano glass who has now built the largest website of its type anywhere in the world devoted to the most fascinating and beautiful of all art forms - Venetian Glass blowing!
Ciao
Dean

Sorry to be mundane but if any use, generic label, run of the mill vase. :pb:

I added a new blue and gold foil label. Oval in shape and believed to me mid century, but not documented as such.
-
I've been looking for this one for quite a while because the owner of the number VM 018 has been unclear.
Hopefully these photos will answer this question.
(One of the) Owner(s) was Ragazzi & Co.
If anybody has found an example which links it to 'Sent' then I'd like to see the identification data so that we can eliminate(?) that or this?? name from the VM list.

Here comes an unusual label
Vetreria Fratelli Scarpa Murano

I discover that also for me ( I live in Italy ) is quite difficult to discover the old Murano glass factory codification. So , i would like to help other people to know some of them ...I start to share these labels and asap ....I will write you again .....I promise ! ;)
-
Thank you for adding the labels, much appreciated.
-
Does anyone have an idea about the glass maker ? Murano VR label. ???
-
Hello.
A search shows, Vecchia Murano Glass.
Their old label.
Regards
Jonas
-
thank you for the reply :-)
-
Old Murano label for Oball 044 .
-
I found another label old codification...... for ZONCA 004
-
Wow! a little grain of gold-dust for the glass librarians.
I hope you wont mind if I share this.
Could you add a picture of the complete item on which it was found, please?
-
The previous identification for 004 (from fossilfly) indicated 'LAG srl'
Zonca is not known as a glass furnace on Murano. It seems to be a lighting company, based in Alessandria, IT which made various mushroom lamps etc on Murano, but also (later) made lamps and lighting in various materials.
Melogranoblu, was/is another lighting designer (from Bergamo) whose products sometimes carry this number on the glass parts.
Born in 1967, the LAG company is listed as making float glass at their Venetian (not Murano) factory, but it seems that they were also producing and selling (blown) lampshades and bases sold to /made for lighting design companies.
In order to qualify for the Municipal VM (numbering/labeling) scheme, they must have owned a site on the island of Murano making (blown) glass, but whether it had the name 'LAG' over the door? whether it had another name? was it taken over from, or by, somebody whose name is well-known? What was the exact address of the LAG-owned furnace on Murano? Is it linked to 'Laguna'?
-
here you are pics of the lamps with both label 004 end Zonca.
-
The Museum of glass in Murano reply to me that unfortunately they don't have a list of the old Murano codification ::)
I am Italian and I live in Italy so I am very motivate in verify all the numbers .....
I will try to conctact people and offices. :)
-
LAG company was a " Societ " in 1963 , address : Fondamenta Navagero 29 Murano island.
De Majo company was near at LAG.
In that place ( old furnace De Majo and old furnace LAG ) now there is a Hotel NH Collection.
-
(DRAFT VERSION...)
The VM004 (and VM04) label is also found on the glasswork from lamps made by Melogranoblu and Zonca (et al.).
The VM numbers are often found on mushroom-lamps and grey-swirled lightshades which were increasingly popular after 1980, and very widely exported.
With carefully measured dimensions required and great consistency in production, the items are not really art-glass, but rather a hand-crafted product supplied to other manufacturers of lighting.
They were produced in a furnace (Fondamenta Navagero 29, across the canal from the Murano Glass Museum) owned by Guido Ferro. It was known as 'LAG' from 1966 (or so) and although it seems to have used that name through 1981 (when the VM system started) it became better known as Yalos in the subsequent years, and the site was moved a few hundred meters to Fondamenta S. Giovanni dei Battuti, 4. It's not clear when the LAG furnace was always part of the Ferro family, or was sold off at some point. (to Yalos?) In many instances the product range seems very similar to Effetre.
The increasing cost of Murano production, would have meant that there was an increasing cost-saving to be had from moving the production of lightshades away from the island to other (italian) cities. Current best information indicates that production ceased on this site around the year 2000-2005.
