Title: Nuutajarvi, Hopea vase and Toikka candlestick for show
Post by: glassobsessed on February 18, 2022, 10:01:35 AM
For Tim, as noted, this part of the board is sometimes not as busy as other sections.

Two fabulous designs, from my perspective anyway. The Pantteri vase designed by Saara Hopea in 1953 is a taller variation, really thick walled and heavy, very tactile. I particularly like the more abstract Oiva Toikka designs and this candlestick from 1968 fits the bill perfectly, the glass that appears black is a very dark almost olive green.

Love the Pantteri vase! Do you remember mine? :)

The Toikka candlestick is a piece I have never seen before, very nice. Seems that his art glass is not easily found (unlike his glass tableware). I have one of his cubes somewhere in my storage, if only I knew where exactly...

That Toikka piece is fabulous indeed. Great fun. :)

The Pantteri vases are really scarce it seems -- I have never seen another one since I found mine...

I was under the impression they were only made for one year, which would help account for scarcity but that is not the case according to:

No idea where I got that idea from now.

Anyway there don't seem to be many around.

I attach a pic from the V&A display of mid century glass my sister sent me a few years back when she was in London...
(she remembered my Pantteri vase :) )

Thanks John for putting those lovely images on the forum.
The Oiva Toikka glass is just fantastic.
Of all the great Finnish designers who were around at the time i think he had the most creative mind. (feel free to object)
I have a couple of Oiva Toikka books and i think that's about as close as i am likely to be to his top end work.
My favorites are The lollipop and bamboo vases.
Tim.

Very illustrious location and companions too Michael!

Don't think I have seen the lollipop design before, if I have it certainly did not register. There was a tall bamboo vase that sold at auction locally a couple of years ago, I was struck by it's size and the deeply unconventional design, Oiva Toikka is prepared to 'think outside of the box' it seems, truly original. It doubled the estimate and sold extremely well (2500 GBP plus commission).

The Lollipop Isle is in the V&A. I couldn't get it in my pocket and there were folk watching.  :'(
