Title: Thomas Webb grapefruit dishes
Post by: Paul S. on August 02, 2021, 05:49:05 PM
this is more for the 'Conifer' surface pattern that the shape and probably best seen on the third picture  -  the overall pattern is like the outline of scales seen on a pine cone, but difficult to show  when photographing clear glass.       As for the back stamp, we're back to what the books describe as the factory mark for c. 1935 - 1949, though this pair look to be very un-worn and date wise more recent, but who knows.         When flicked there is a good long lead glass ring, and height is a little over 4 inches.

Those are nice Paul! I do like grapefruit dishes - they are one of my earlier collections - I think I have around 40 or 50 of them packed away in boxes in the wardrobe, but none of these. (That's not a hint btw!)

I have a small footed glass which I think is the same design but is unmarked on the base, so maybe my glass is Webb too... (fingers crossed!)

thanks Anne  -    the puzzle with these really is reconciling the unblemished underside of the feet with the apparent date line of this mark.      I suppose we have to again say these have been in Grannies cupboard, unused ;D        I think it was a similar 'glass in boxes' that persuaded me to thin out  -  but of course everyone to their own.         I ought to use these  -  I do have the occasional half a grapefruit, but in a boring china bowl.

I bet they'd taste much nicer from a proper grapefruit dish though Paul, and you have somewhere to pop your pips!  ;D

just noticed  -  'Grannies' should be Granny's  -  not that it really matters I suppose, just annoys me  ...............  bit like the present controversy of not sounding the 'g'. ;)
