This is by S. Reich. The pattern appears to have been inspired by the Sabino design 'Les Oursins', a.k.a. 'Algues et Oursins', but with a few differences.

Pamela has an example on her site here: http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/schalen/06561.html

Hi Pamela,

I'm afraid that's not quite the one I meant... I don't think the second bowl is Sabino, just another similar design. 'Algues et Oursins', the one I meant is shown in Ph. Decelle's Sabino Maitre Verrier de L'Art Deco 1878-1961 Catalogue Raisonne; the catalogue number is different for each size, but the largest one (& the only size illustrated) is 9008 (35cm diameter). Unfortunately I don't have a photo, but a couple of sizes are still being made & can be seen in the current Sabino catalogue here:
http://www.sabinoartglass.com/proddetail.asp?pid=229
http://www.sabinoartglass.com/proddetail.asp?pid=233

As to which came first, I don't know the dates of introduction of either, but the Sabino version certainly appears to have been in production by 1931 as the 1931 price is listed in Decelle.

Whilst wading through catalogues looking for trinket sets I found a drawing of what appears to be the Reich bowl referred to by Stephen above, on page 13 of the 1939 Riihimaki pressed glass catalogue. It is shown as pattern 6263 - the catalogue may be viewed online here (as a PDF) http://www.pressglas-korrespondenz.de/archiv/pdf/pk-2003-1w-11-mb-riihimaeki-1939.pdf.

Has anyone any thoughts as to why it may be there, or where I may view the Reich 1934 catalogue entry referred to on Pamela's site please?  I do like a good mystery!

A very interesting find: didn't know that Riihimaki also made this pattern. I can't seem to find the bowl it in the Reich 1934 catalogue scans (I'm in a rush so may have missed it) but the pattern is certainly shown in the 1936 Reich catalogue available at www.glas-musterbuch.de (it's shown at the bottom of Tafel 7, catalogue number 8779).

Edited to add: Also in the 1934 catalogue as per the information on Pressglas-Pavillon.de : Tafel 69, no. 8779

Stephen, thank you, I'd forgotten about checking on Pamela's Musterbuch site!

It's a shame that the Riihimaki catalogue has no sizes for comparison. It is dated 1939 though.  The bowl is given as 100mm in the 1934 Reich catalogue.

Antoinette, could you tell us what the diameter of your bowl is please?

The large pink bowl Pamela shows I have seen in a local antique shop in opalescent.I have a mermaid vase and also a fish and seaweed gondola shaped bowl that has the exact moulded seaweed design as the bowl Pamela showed.
I have often thought that bowl to be Reich aswell as my mermaid vase as its high quality detailing which Reich were good at.

And the fish bowl.Take a look at both this and the mermaid vase and see the style of the seaweed...now look at Pamelas pink sealife bowl and look at the seaweed on that one. They are exactly the same

Looks to be the same as Nigel's mermaid vase except for the pattern around the top of the vase.
