There is a very interesting report on page 14 of the Dudley Chronicle 13/8/15. A certain Councillor has suggested that the art collection held by DMBC this includes glass as well as paintings be sold and the the money reinvested in services.

I have donated significant amounts of early British pressed glass to Broadfield House over the last few years specifically on the basis that I was contributing to an important resource, freely-available to all-comers, and I shall be quite upset if substantial collections of glassware from Broadfield House are sold and the sale revenues reinvested in local general services.

I have absolutely no objection if the items which I donated are subsequently freely lodged in some other public collection(s) but it was certainly not my intention that they be sold within a few years to merely help prop-up Dudley's precarious general public finances in the short term.

It would appear that the Philistines are at the gate yet again. I shall await developments with interest.

Fred.

Quote from the article:
Quote
There is no value to art if it's not getting looked at.

So on that thought ... all museums in all countries should sell all of their items in storage. And how about all the of the private collections that do not "get looked at" by more than a very few people?

And how will museum curators and collectors etc. add to the knowledge (and hence the "value") of artworks through research if everything is sold off?

Maybe one councilor's viewpoint will not be shared by too many others?

There is always a vast amount of stuff in storage in every other Museum.
I have frequently asked to see certain things I know museums have, and they're *always* in storage.

I have managed, though making personal appointments, sometimes managed to see a few items. Normally several appointments are needed to see enough, because they'll only bring a limited number of things out.

Perth Museum brought out 18 pieces at a time, the V&A in London only let us see one piece.
I've been waiting about 9 years to see an Alison Kinnaird piece, here in Dundee.

Unfortunately, I suspect all councillors are more likely to value cash over art, heritage or history. They wouldn't be councillors otherwise.

Substantial funding for the new museum is coming from Europe.

This wasn't easy to achieve and all those involved in the application process should be congratulated.

I note that the councillor who made this remark about selling off the council's art treasures belongs to a party whose main agenda is to oppose EU membership.

Is there a connection? Probably.

Should we be worried? Probably not.

....the oxygen of publicity...

I totally agree that the BGF have done an amazing job in securing the ERDF grant, but as the council have reneged twice over the Broadfield House issue.

  1) Broadfield House Glass Museum will not close.
  2) Broadfield House Glass Museum will not close until White House is ready.

When i spoke to the girls behind the desk last week they said nothing had been signed or set in stone as per a new place and they were loosing their jobs, if that's changed in the last week i'm not sure?. Out the front there is a lot of land that can be built on or redeveloped that comes with the site, i can see the building being converted into a perfect nursing/care home.

more info... here's link to another article, with excerpts below...

http://www.expressandstar.com/news/2015/08/25/broadfield-house-glass-museum-to-close-after-35-years/

". . . [t]he museum will close its doors to visitors on September 30 at 4pm after more than 35 years.

The closure comes as plans gather pace for a new £5 million museum of glass to be built in Wordsley.

It will be based on the White House Glass Cone site, opposite the Red House Glass Cone visitor attraction.

The museum is being funded by a £2.13m European grant and the proceeds of the sale of Broadfield House will be part of the council’s contribution.

Collections from Broadfield House will be mothballed at the site in the meantime."

and

"Meanwhile, a project is under way to collate people's memories of Broadfield House before its closure.

They are asking people to celebrate its legacy by sharing pictures of the museum from its past and present.

People can upload images to Twitter using @Glass_museum or call 01384 812745 for details."

Well we could always split the contents between ourselves for safe keeping to stop Dudley council flogging it off, what do you think?

Very sad as it was a beautiful showcase for the glass.

Can anyone tell me what happened to the site called Gorgeous Glass which I used to browse avidly to see the collection.  It seems to have disappeared - it was so easy to use.

John drove me to Stourbridge a couple of weeks ago so that I could see the collection before it closed,  and I am so glad I went.  The collection is awesome and I hope with all my heart that it is packed safely and stored well until the new venue opens... and in my mind, that can't be too soon.
Along with a Museum visit, the other 'must do's' were, visiting Robert Bevan-Jones, Jonathan Harris and Vic Bamforth.  All of whom made us so welcome and spent hours chatting and looking at their wonderful glass. We also managed to squeeze a visit to the Red House Cone whist we were there, before driving to North Wales so that John could have a well deserved rest from glass and a good long climb in the Welsh Mountains.
We will be back to Stourbridge soon and certainly when the new White House opens.

Anne you can search the collection here
http://blackcountryhistory.org/

So if for example you type in  Richardson glass
then a whole long section will come up with all pictures of items and articles they have in the archives.
Unfortunately the articles are not available online so you have to go to the archives to see the references of course.

I so wish I lived nearer to the archives.

I cannot find the Gorgeous Glass site I used to use - someone had taken amazing large pictures of many of the items and they were able to blow up and see the details closely.  The black country history site doesn't have anywhere near such good pictures.  But hey, I'm not complaining.  At least they do have pictures. Let's please hope that Dudley continue to maintain the site.

Barry took a lot of pics when we went but he had to sign one of those permit forms that allows personal use only.  I wonder if sharing them for reference would now be allowed?  Perhaps we could collate all of the images that we (all of us, not just me+him) have taken into an online album for reference, as we have no idea how long the collection will be out of public view for.  I am thinking perhaps a BHGM Collection Flickr album, which would allow us to have hi-res images, and that it could be done so anyone with BH images could upload into it on a group basis? Perhaps John or Nathan might be able to advise if we'd be breaching any BHGM rule by so doing?
