I think it says Peter Goss 79. The image is clearest in your 080404, where the shadow picks up the first name.

That makes it early for him, in his Jam Factory Sam Herman period in South Australia.

See also:  Re: Info Request Peter Goss Australian Studio Glass Artist (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,42578.msg255539.html#msg255539) where a good likeness to the signature can be seen. And the thread is full of information about him.

But I could not see anything to help with the first lettering that Jim shows here.

Yes Peter Goss and a very early one too.  You should read the prior post to this one - it gives quite a bit more info.

Yes, Peter Goss but not the Jam Factory days (sorry Stuart). The other annotation says "QLD No 79", which indicates it is the 79th such item made after he moved to Queensland. He had a small studio at a tourist attraction called the House of Bottles not far from where he eventually settled in the Sunshine Coast area. He hated that first studio because of the constant stream of inane questions from the tourists he was supposed to entertain.

The OP's piece is delightful with that back lighting.

I bow to your superior understanding, Trevor. I was reading it as 1979

It is dated 1979, as you say. He left the Jam Factory in 1977 and worked at the Paris Creek studios near Adelaide for a while and then moved to Queensland. He was working there in 1979.

You said above that the 79 meant it was the 79th item he made in Queensland. so he made no 79 in 1979?

As I see it, the number 79 appears twice in the inscription. One entry says "Peter Goss 79" showing the date of 1979 (photo 3) and the other says "QLD 79" showing the place and serial number 79 (photo 2).
