Reading about David's fish, and talk of friggers (fish-friggers? ) reminded me I have a fish in one of my cabinets! It's a rather different species, but it is made of glass so I reckon its entitled to appear on this board  http://tinypic.com/28p40j
I call it the 'knitted' fish  because that's what it looks like to me. It's not very well-balanced - as you can see, it can't stand up properly but always falls forward onto its nose, poor thing!
My question is not who made it; it is obviously a bit of lamp-work, though interesting IMHO because it is probably not less than 50 years old and possibly as much as 100. I inherited it, along with a whole cabinet full of up-to-100-year-old 'tourist tat', from a much-travelled great aunt.
So ... what I would like to know is - what is the technique called where a glassworker 'knits' with strands of glass like this? I have seen baskets and suchlike made of glass in this way - though never another fish

Hello Leni,
I don't know the name of the technique, sorry, and sorry, but I'd like to differ about your description of this "tat" you inherited! This looks like good quality opaline glass, (I love good opaline glass) and some of the other "tat" was real Bimini. Hardly "tat", IMHO. :D Sue.

Yes, I suppose you're right! But you should see some of it
I won't post pictures here because most of it isn't glass and Frank will 'banish' me to the 'Leni Cafe' (and probably make me do the washing up! )
Seriously though, I should take it all to an Antiques Roadshow one day - probably find out some of it is worth a bomb!
But enough of this .... What *is* that technique called? :? The annoying thing is, I know I've heard it but I just can't remember :x

:? I am puzzled that you call this a knitted glass item and ask how it was done. Unless my old eyes have missed something that everyone else is seeing clearly, to me it is a typical glass item blown into a mould.
I would love to read other opinions, also any info on what I may have missed.

Hi Geoff, I have to say your poor old eyes do indeed deceive you!
Sorry, it's probably my fault because the picture is not clear enough
The body of the fish is made up of strands of glass which were obviously laid across each other in a basket-work effect while hot. This is a lampwork technique which I have seen done, and was sure there was a 'proper' name for. I have seen it described as 'spun glass' but that wasn't the name I was thinking of :?
I guess I shall just have to settle for 'spun glass lampwork'
Thanks anyway, everybody.

Technique is called Lattice, at least in the US, saw an example in a book on glass animals - not a fish though.

Another pic vanished Leni! :)

OK Anne. This fish is now in Frank's Zoo, so I do indeed have some better pics than the previous ones! Here they are:

Super, thanks Leni. :)
