Title: Stuart Vase 1920's ?
Post by: mhgcgolfclub on March 17, 2007, 01:51:21 PM
Hi Can anybody confirm that this vase was made by Stuart, having looked through a couple of books it looks very similar, polished pontil and the vase is unmarked, 7.25" tall and weighs just over a 1kg

Hello Roy,

Thanks for the page references - very helpful.

Both the vases that your looking at are cut, with no bubbles. The vase in Lesley Jackson has polished prunties that admitedly give the effect of bubbles, but they are definately on the surface. Similarly, the vases in the illustration in McConnell are all cut, with no bubbles ???. The marks in the illustration are so small its difficult to tell, but they are short mitre cuts placed in vertical lines. Your vase has an integral foot, but the one in McConnell is applied.

To be honest, I thought that I better check your sources before making any comment, as there might have been something I was unaware of. I nearly made the observation earlier that no Stuart with bubbles comes to mind. I don't think it's a Stuart shape either. Sorry.

I don't believe Whitefriars/Powell, but Thos. Webb and S&W both made bubbled items of similar style - and both are often unmarked. Worth a thought, but not, I'm afraid, conclusive.

I spent a bit of time trying to find a similar Webb vase last night as I had the same thought as Nigel.  I think you could legitimately upload it to 'Is It' on whitefriars.com and ask whether it's WF, as it's similar to some Powell designs - perhaps someone there would be able to say whether it's Webb or not?   ???
