Title: Old cut glass claret jug or decanter

I think this is old. It's damaged a lot on the stopper and a little on the bottom half but it was only £1.

8 inches high.

I wonder if anyone recognises the pattern? It might not be possible to find the maker by the pattern, but I'm giving it a try anyway.


It seems very well made.  8)

I don't think a maker will be easy to decide.

Looks like a late 19th or early 20th century claret jug to me, but in an interesting squat shape. And I don't think the stopper is right for the jug.

I'm quite surprised that you don't think the stopper is right. It does fit perfectly (tightly) and the two pattern's on the top of the stopper match the patterns on the base.  :-\

I'm glad you think it's old though.  ;D

The stopper echoes the cog shaping of the decanter very well too.  No idea on maker, but I'd agree it has some age to it. I rather like it, TC.

Ok, now I have another look at the photo of the top of the stopper (at a 200% enlargement) I can see that the leaf garland and central leaf motif do seem to match the leaf swags around central leaf motif on the body. So on that basis I'd agree they were made for each other.

It was just that at first sight, I thought the stopper would have had a more rounded form to follow the lines of the shoulder of the body. And also, the stopper seemed to me to be leaning a bit, suggesting a not too good fit.

Well spotted, the back half of the rim looks flat.

I think it's polished flat making the back half lower. Restoration? Or was it made like this?
