Title: A question for the Vaseline Glass experts
Post by: Leni on March 21, 2007, 10:52:41 AM
This post was prompted by the wonderful pictures Dave Peterson posted in his reply to Beryl, here http://www.vaselineglass.org/artglass.html so Dave, it's all your fault! ;) And yes Beryl, I too needed the towel over the keyboard!  ;D

Some of the images there led me to think that maybe someone who's an expert on this sort of glass might know exactly what should be hanging from this vaseline thorn 'frame'?

I've always imagined it should be some sort of weird 'flower'!  but I suppose it might have been some sort of epergne-style basket ???

I expect it would be to much to ask if anyone (Dave?) recognises the style and can guess who the maker might be, as well? ::)

Leni, I don't think I'm seeing what you're intending us to see with your links.  You need to use the absolute link below the image (in the File Info section) as your link, not the dynamic one you've used, as those change content depending on which sorting order the viewer is using to look at the GlassGallery.  I'm seeing rice-patterned vase and a shelf with various items on it...  :-\

Actually, it looks more like a shamrock to me, so perhaps something Irish? ;D ;)

My guess would be a thorny basket with handle.  It would be consistent with the theme of the thorny frame.

Thank you, David  :)  Have you any pictures of examples?  Or can you suggest any of the old catalogues which might show something similar?  I am sure I've seen something like it somewhere, but I can't remember where  ???

Thank you very much for that, Bernard!  :-*

I don't actually have a copy of 'Victorian Decorative Glass: British Designs, 1850-1914' by Mervyn Gulliver, but I obviously should have!  So I've ordered one from Amazon  ;D
Many thanks again

Well, my Gulliver arived this morning - and I'm in heaven!  ;D ;D ;D  How have I lived without this book?  Lovers of Victorian 'frilly' glass please note - wear a bib if you don't want to spoil the book by drooling on it!  ::)

Bernard, I see just what you mean about the ??Richardson and other rustic hanging baskets on page 183!  However, my frame has no hook or any sign of one having broken off  ???  Still, perhaps the basket had a hook rather than a straightforward handle.  Now all I have to do is find a basket that has survived the loss of its frame!  How likely is that, I ask myself?  :-\
Anyway, many thanks for your help, and for prompting me to buy this most beautiful book  :-*

Lack of a review in our book reviews topics perhaps?

http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,569.0.html and who better to review than someone just discovering its value :)

Give me a chance to drool over ... er.... that is, to read it, Frank!  :D  ;)

Hi Leni, :)
I knew you'd love this book! It is one of my favourites (& I have over 50 books on glass) & you are so right, there is so much utterly drool-worthy Victoriana in this book.
Good luck with finding the matching basket......I too have a few pieces waiting for baskets & other bits, & I live in hope! For example I have a tall peloton vase with 2 hooked handles that need baskets. I think I'll be searching a long time but as the saying goes, getting there is half the fun! :)
