Title: 1930s purple internal ribbed bowl - ID: Stevens & Williams
Post by: Andy on March 29, 2007, 08:46:26 PM
I think this is probably Whitefriars, or Holmegaard, c1930s (maybe other English)
Any ideas??
its 4 inches tall, Amethyst/purple, polished pontil, internal ribbed.
I cant see it in the available WF catalogues :-\

Can't suggest a maker, but it's definitely not Holmegaard.

Thanks Nic,
i know its similar to the ribbed Holmegaard that gets confused with WF,
narrows it down, i think it must be Whitefriars c 20s or 30s :-\ :-\
the Amethyst colour is identical to stuff in Whitefriars book,
Thanks,
Andy

I am not sure if it is or isn't.  Della has a similar one in green. It would be unusual for Whitefriars as it has a clear foot, whereas all the similar Whitefriars I have seen have self-coloured bases.  There are some similar, but only similar shapes in the Wuidart catalogue. Those vases though look apparantly slightly more elongated and taller rather than round as yours (and Dellas).  So short answer, I don't know.  emmi

Not convinced about the clear foot?  The 30's stuff all seems to have a self coloured foot with the clear bases not introduced until the 50's when that sort of shape would have been dropped.

EDIT:  typing at the same time Emmi!

As far as my research has taken me, I can't see that Holmegaard produced many ribbed pieces and the ribbed glass that they did produce mostly consisted of very simple and plain tumbler shapes, especially for decorative glass. This is true of both JE Bang and Lutken.

Hi Andy,

Here is mine:

I know that they are quality and there are so similar to the Wealdstone for Wuidart vases, that it is untrue. The quality and the finish is impeccable. Definitely 1930's and the similarites to the W73 (set aside the clear foot (which has an identical shape, size and finish btw) and an inch in height) are amazing.

Hello All,

Let's dispell this W/F association with these pieces. A huge number of factories made horizontally optic wares, including, for instance, Orresfors (E Hald) and Kosta (Elis Bergh) in Sweden.

However, this is a home grown variety - Stevens & Williams (Royal Brierley).

As far as my research has taken me... ah, what a great get-out clause for being wrong!  ;D

Lutken did in fact design a rounded ribbed vase - pattern 11693, designed in 1943. It was 90mm tall, it wasn't footed, and was only available in clear glass (according to Lutken's work notes).

So it's not the vase in this thread, but I thought I should just correct my earlier statement in case one does turn up on here and I end up with egg on my face.  :-[
