Title: Swedish carnival glass bowl? : ID - US Glass 'Cosmos & Cane'
Post by: BJB on March 30, 2007, 06:53:08 PM
I am feeling rather proud, as I bought three bits of carnival glass, and have managed to identify the two vases as Fenton, one April showers in blue and the other as diamond and rib in green  :)

But  this bowl I think may be Swedish, and is a mixture of flowers and hobnail pattern on the outside and what looks like 4 peacock feathers inside.

Am I on  hat-trick or fallen at the third? ::)

Sorry, but you fell at the third  :o But you'll be a winner anyhow............

The rosebowl is American - it is "Cosmos and Cane" by the United States Glass Company. The interior pattern is "Headdress". The latter was also used by Brockwitz - drawings, photos more details etc in our journals and books.

The reason I said you'll be a winner is that the rosebowl is a very, very nice piece and valuable too.

Congratulations, Barbara.

Hi Glen,

You are such a wonderful star, thankyou.

Its all down to you that I notice carnival glass at all, never mind own some.

You are right, it is fascinating, still don't like maridold (even this bowl, just thought it was Swedish and different) but love green, and now I've seen it, the blue comes a close second.

Will stick the bowl on ebay.com (seeing as the UK items don't show up on the .com site by default anymore  >:( ) in a couple of days.

Barbara - if this is your item on eBay.com.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330104869881

.......then you may like to know that the pattern is (as I wrote above) Cosmos and Cane, and not Cosmos and CRANE.  ;)

Hi Glen,

Have corrected it many thanks  :-[

My only excuse is that it was very early in the morning when I listed.

BTW have just come back from Swinderby Fair, and noticed a large amount of blue "GoodLuck" bowls with a frilly edge, are these copies?

I did decline a pair for £450.00  ;)

Barbara...the Good Lucks could be fakes, but they may not be! Impossible to know without seeing them.

Glen, there was one on nearly every other stall!! thats what made me a bit wary, a lot of grape and cable, some stag and holly, but most I didn't know what it was, but very expensive, each picece was over £50.00 for the plain and over £80.00 if patterned.

It seems to have taken over from Whitefriars now as the dealers glass of choice as no-one can say its NOT carnival, so the price has gone silly.

We paid £30.00 (David nearly keeled over at that) to get in, walked round it all in 41/2 hours, it was not very big, and came home with 6 pieces, (non carnival ) the selection of glass was awful, alot of repro and Chinese pretending to be real.

Still back in the warm now and just begining to de-frost
