Andy,
Regarding 1) My question is why you think this is Skrdlovice? (and yes I know people think all Skrdlovice is valuable, but after this week, a certain auction will truly separate wheat from chaff)
Quoting from an eminent specialist.... "thoroughly disheartened"... me like-wise. Many collectors and dealers do their best to find their info, and BUY BOOKS. There is no substitute for reading, and the web does not act as a good or immediate substitute for knowledge, experience and familiarity with and of glass.
Spend some money on good resource books. (A certain highly-admired eBayer and very recent member of this board was prepared to back her search for knowledge with a £176 investment on a single book.)
I am not, like many other serious contributors to this board, a substitute for Millers Guides, (even where we contribute to them), and if this cantankerous fart is peed off, it is at the level of there being so much info here on this board, and no-one bothers to use the search facility???
What do people want, a serious glass information board, or merely an eBay ID/marketing facility???
Seriously annoyed,
Le Casson.

Marcus,
sorry youre upset, ive only been collecting for a few years, i stumbled across
Skrdlovice accidentally and like it! I have no intention of ebaying this piece, or what
its value is, i probably paid too much for it anyway, it is for my shelves, as it matches
these other ones,
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-6195
And im sorry i havent managed to get a full library on all the glass in the world,
personally , i feel a great gratification if i can manage to help someone identify something,
and , yes, you do sound like a peed off cantankerous fart,
I hope its just a bad day, and you are not always like that!

Thanks Ivo,
im afraid Marcus has rather spoilt the fun and enjoyment i was getting from this site :'( :'(

Neither have I...
but many folks work damned hard to acquire that knowledge and share it....
If I have spoilt things..... hey ho, I can be one very miserable bastard....
But... I ask again, why you feel the item you highlight as Skrdlovice, is, in your opinion, from that factory?
Sure, they produced items of a similar design base, as did several other CZ companies and designers. Like-wise Scandinavia, and Whitefriars.
What is it for you, that tells you CZ, and if no other candidates, why not? Which designers do you suggest?

Le Casson

Marcus,
Ive just always thought they were Skrdlovice, but as i say , im learning,
ive got some other similar pieces , that have Skrdlovice labels, ive probably bought a few on ebay,
classified as Skrdlovice, from places such as Austria and Germany, and maybe they were something
else, so now im not sure about anything, whatever they are, i like them , and look out for
similar ones, then its nice to use all possible places to help identify them , books, the web,
or maybe ask someone who has years more experience than myself :-\
Id like to think this forum is for people with all sorts of knowledge, tastes and experiences of
all sorts of different glass , not just the experts!
I dont want to overtax your braincells at all, but if you think im on the wrong track with my
opinions, point me the right way, and i will try and find out more for myself!!
I seem to learn about new glass companies every day, so, please, give me a few more years
before you get too upset with us amateurs!
Cheers Andy
-
Andy,
overtax your braincells at all
I have, sadly, but one, dedicated at all times to CZ/SLO glass of the communist period.
It is always at the fullest extent of its limited capacity ;D
If I get annoyed, then it is at an apparent belief that all items of this type are "propeller" vases by Kotik, for Skrdlovice.
Like-wise at those who think all vases from Sklo Union are by Vizner.
Some of the most affordable books are the most accurate, the most expensive, inadequate.
Yet, looking at Ivo's suggestions, these are some of the most common items, well documented.
You do have some very good Skrdlovice items, and some will not be valuable, even though no longer in production. But you must learn to differentiate. A Burian piece will be interesting, but that is all. A Foltyn item from a limited individual artists edition may become valuable. A signed Vizner is valuable, as it implies that he was present when Spinar or Beranek made the item. Yet if the item went into full-scale production, they are interesting but not valuable.
But, most importantly, no amount of similarities makes a Scandinavian item, Skrdlovice.

Oh pooh.
you should not let your pleasure be galled by an irritated snarl from Marcus who can be, in his own words, a right miserable bastard. But who in reality is a very wise, likeable and charitable man even if he likes to think differently. Life is too short for dog fights. Now stop it, both of you.

Seconded
-
Youre all right!
And i have to admit i can understand Marcus's lack of patience with us novices ::)
Especially when you know a lot about a particular area, I havent decided where my
collection is going yet, its just always nice to know what you have, regardless of value,
its the thrill of the chase, the detective work, and trying to narrow it down,
unfair for Marcus to be grumpy old Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple for everyone else! ;)
Thanks for your help Marcus, i will try not to upset you again :-*
Regards Andy

Andy, I've been collecting for...oooh...about 8 years I suppose, and still don't really 'collect' anything in particular although I have my favourite countries of origin. My house (and shed!) has lots of glass, but no one defining collection. Perhaps we're just glass butterflies. ;) ;D

"Oh happy day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" ;D ;D

Andy,
I should not have snapped your head off like that.
Despite the mass of available material regarding Beranek and Skrdlovice, few people get beyond a small number of big-name designers, and fail to comprehend the role of the factory during the communist period. Nor, often, is there any attempt to comprehend the nature of production and output from that factory. (see my comments in other Skrdlovice related threads.)
350 items from this company were put under the hammer at the week-end. Some were misidentified with regard to designer, and descriptions as being unica or serica items were mis-leading. The vast majority were production items, and not either unica or serica, and many are still currently in production.
Because the factory is well-known and one of the better documented companies in the now Czech Republic, Skrdlovice and Beranek names are being used as a catch-all for unidentified Czechoslovakian art glass, and a trawl of eBay, will show exactly what I am referring to.
An example is this item:
http://cgi.ebay.de/Kunstglas-Cz-Beranek-Skrdlovice-70iger-J_W0QQitemZ200088789451QQcategoryZ7481QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
which was never a Skrdlovice product.

Marcus

Ok, so what is it. I must admit your taste has me worried Marcus? You're excused if it was for 'research'. ;D ;D
-
Hi Christine.....
I bought it, hoping to swap it for an important piece of Sklo Union (or further Czech research paperwork) at some stage.
It is a Moser item. Designed by Jiri Suhajek around 1973/74, from his first (as factory designer at Moser) range of vases and jardinieres. Pattern number 54253/02.
An interesting and relatively important item.
Regards,
Marcus

Sorry if this sounds a little dumb :-\ Are you referring to the piece that you bought, or the piece that you wanted to swap it for?
:-X

Hi Della,
This relates to the item I bought.
All well with you?

Thank you Marcus. My first reaction was it's horrible, could almost be modern Chinese, but 70s makes sense. It's the red and yellow I think, blue and green I could go with...

They did these in blue/yellow, and various other combinations.

Fabulous, thanks Marcus, and I hope that the same goes for you. My family is over and I have been busy with my new grand-daughter. I thought that was how you were referring to the vase, but my brain is a little mush at the moment. ::) ;D
