It looks like someone was trying to engrave a Murano signature on the bottom and lost control at the end.

I've had Mtarfa pieces with a similar scrawl

The second letter could well be a "t". But I like the image of someone slipping mid-way through ("That "*&@#$&% dremmel made my hand go numb!")  ;D

It definitelt has a maltese look about it so I might think Mtarfa also.
