Title: Maker of Lidded Vase/Pot - Nazeing?
Post by: zidori on April 17, 2007, 10:23:55 AM
Can anyone please help with the identification of this lidded pot or vase? It is approx 5 inches high. Sorry the base photo is somewhat out of focus - will try to take better pic and change it.

Well, it looks like May Green, but that exact shape isn't in Geoff's book. I've changed the title to try to attract Stephen sph@ngw and Nigel - hope that's okay!

Hi all,

Not a conclusive assessment I'm afraid - more of a discussion about the item.

No, I don't think that it's pre-war May Green, and the colours changed post-war. The way that the colour's laid in is closer to items that were in the Elwell find, for which more research is required to attain accurate dating.

The foot and general form is close to an 'egg' shaped vase that is often referred to as Nazeing, although those have broken pontils. It is difficult to see the way the base is finished on your photo Ronnie, but it appears to have a ground 'satin' finish, which I associate with post-war items of Nazeing.
