Title: Heavy Glass Vase ID help
Post by: Tony H on April 21, 2007, 02:41:01 AM
Hi guys
I have this heavy vase 1.035kg, it is 7.75 inch high, the top and base diameter are 4 inch and at the centre 2.5 inch, the base flair is .75 inch below the vase base. It looks as if it has been fire polished.

Would be very pleased for any help with ID here are some photos.

Hi Tony - I am pretty sure this is a Riihimaki piece. I am also aware of two examples of this in marigold Carnival. It's a heavy, statuesque item - and very impressive.

Riihimaki catalogue 1939 - item 5992.

Hi Tony - you must be the judge of whether this is the same item. I can only find an illustration that shows one side, and I can't see for sure if it is identical to yours. It may not be the same piece, so we may need to carry on looking! I will also try and get a photo of the marigold vase to show you too.

Many thanks, Tony - your excellent drawing helps a lot - I think you're right, the Riihimaki one is not the same (just wish they showed the other side too  :o).

I'll keep on looking  :)

Many thanks again for the drawing.

EUREKA! I looked at your drawing and something was familiar....the notched top especially. I walked away and the image was imprinted on my mind. Then it hit me! It's SOWERBY.

I rushed to the catalogues and confirmed - it is definitely Sowerby 2477 vase. Sizes made were 5", 6" and 8". Colours were flint, amber, blue and green. Your drawing, Tony, is a 100% identical match.

For anyone with our Sowerby catalogue CDs it is in Catalogue 38 circa 1950s (possibly 1956) on the second CD.

Many thanks, what a surprise, Sowerby would not have been high on my list, maybe I should invest in your CD's
