Title: Amber opalescent ruffled bowl
Post by: uphoosier on May 01, 2007, 06:19:57 PM
I purchased this at a 2nd hand shop in Germany about 35 years ago, and have never been able to identify the maker or even most likely country of origin.  All opinions are appreciated.  It is 10" in diameter.  Thanks for looking.

I looked at the photographs without reading your post properly, and was going to suggest German - then I noticed you said you bought it in Germany! So that's always a good sign. It's hard to see properly the design or quality from the small photographs, but it's likely by a lesser contemporary/competitor of WMF, c.1900-ish.

If you check out eBay, you'll find it's dotted with very similar pieces - almost exclusively in Germany.

No marks on the base.  My German is good enough to navigate websites, but "opalescent" isn't part of my vocabulary.  The on-line translators' word didn't yield any results on Ebay.de.  What is the word Germans use for opalescent?

Opalglas.

Though you may fare better with 'Tafelaufsatz' and 'Fußschale' as search words.

Thanks to both of you for the help.  Nic, I see why you said mine looked like a lesser maker - searching those terms yielded some incredible looking glass.
