Title: Peacocks on Glass
Post by: Glen on May 09, 2007, 03:59:05 PM
If you don't like Carnival Glass...

If you don't want to see some interesting early 1900s illustrations featuring peacocks...

If you don't want to look at photos of peacocks on Carnival Glass...

then whatever you do, do NOT go to my home page http://www.carnival-glass.net

And whatever you do, do NOT click on the Peacock Magic link there

 ;D

Oh how lovely.... Max, you MUST show this to Colin and cheer up his loveless day... >:D

My mother always treats Peacock feathers as unlucky.. do you know the origins of that superstition?

Lynne...thanks...and no, I don't know the origins of that superstition. I'd like to know - maybe someone will help us out.  :)

Thanks Glen  :D  I love that vase by Cristalerias Piccardo - I'd like that one please.  ;)

It is funny how the feathers were viewed as superstitious, as Lynne says.  I think it was the Victorians that perpetuated that myth, although I'm not sure.  I've got them everywhere, so I must be extremely unlucky.  :o

How lovely, Glen! The blue colour has to be my favourite colour of them all.

I love the new list of Carnival makers that you have made too, Glen.  :D

I don't know the origins of the superstition either, Lynne, but my Nana was of the same mind.  ::)

Hey Glen, I love your explanation of the Tornado vase.  I can see the similarity to tornados too...funny how a names sticks, isn't it?  :)

Caithness managed a peacock inspired piece in 1993 (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=1202&category_id=174&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1) even if the marketing was a little ambitious!

Perthshire Paperweights produced a Peacock cane (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=1364&category_id=202&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=27), sadly I do not have a good sized image.

No doubt the Peacock is one of natures most amazing creatures, it is hardly surprising to find it represented as 'special' objects in glass.
