Title: Two Sulphide paperweights

Would appreciate any help with identity of two Sulphide paperweights.

Hi Jean,

I have an idea that the image for your sulphide of the kneeling child may come from a painting "The Infant Samuel" by Sir Joshua Reynolds. The pose and hair appear to be similar, as is the part of the boy's leg which has been revealed.

You can find the painting easily on the Internet.

The darker red paperweight looks typical of items attributed to early Val St Lambert

Hi.  I agree the red ground might be Val St Lambert, but I think it safer to say that both weights are probably from Belgium or Alsace. VSL usually have a higher quality of manufacture than those you show (see clickable images below of two VSL weights).  There were a lot of glass factories around in the late 19th C in those areas, some of whom made sulphide paperweights.  The spatter ground weight appears to have a rudimentary torsade - perhaps an attempt to copy a VSL weight?
