The 700D seems to have been smaller from what I can see...  Chris gives it at 11.5" diameter, whereas Cheryl says hers is 14" across. Could Cheryl's be the 706 (given by Chris at 14.5" diameter) instead.  Perhaps Chris will be able to comment further.

The turnover in the 706 looks relatively small compared with the bowl, unlike Cheryl's  ??? Confused as usual

Possibly Walther Violet cloud? I'm not too familiar with the Walther shapes though.

Siegmar Geiselberger's web site might help - you need a fair command of German though ;)

Or could it be 735D at 15-inch diameter? Remember Davidson sizes are very arbitary. The shape also looks like a 34 as well, apart from the size.

Whatever: it is a very nice find :)

I was just wondering, were all these bowls originally sold with a flower frog, or could they be bought without one? Would it be a hard job to find a large one of the right colour? Regards cheryl

Chris Stewart would be able to answer for certain, but I believe they could be purchased without flower frog/block. However, they do crop up on eBay frequently, but getting the right shape/size might take some time - particularly the larger ones. I suspect yours would use a dome-type and measuring the inside of the base will give you an idea to the size required (might also help determine which type of bowl you have as well!)

From www.cloudglass.com:
Quote
The Dome flower block was in the following sizes 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4. 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7. 7.5, 8.5 and 10 inches diameter.

I just can't imagine a 10-inch one :o

My bowl is 5 1/2 inches across the inside bottom, how many holes would one that size have? I was going to sell it, but the more I look at it the more I like it so I'm going to keep it!! Most of my glass is clear deco, this is my first cloud piece, maybe the start of a whole new collection!!

Yeah, that's how we all start - I can't move for glass now.. ;)

I've been collecting cloud for about 3-4 years and have quite a collection now, including two elusive orange cloud bowls :)

I'll send Chris a mail. He is very busy during the week, so often replies to queries at the weekend.

I rather think Bernard had a huge (10"?) dome at Harrogate a couple of years back. First big one I'd ever seen - amazing!

Anne — That was a mere 8½" at that first Harrogate fair;  not a 10" monster.   An expert florist would forget conventional flowers — probably starting with something like pampas grass.   I would love to see one demonstrated.

Re the supply of separate flower blocks etc, in the 1950s Sowerbys (certainly) and Davidsons (almost certainly) would supply anything anyone wanted.  This was easy because nothing was pre-packed in cartons, apart from a tiny number for mail order.  However, of course, we had no control over what retailers or wholesalers would supply in turn to their customers.

Hi,

Your bowl is either a 706 or a 735 D. These are very similar in shape and size and very difficult to tell apart. I would guess it is a 706.

Both take a 7 1/2 inch flower dome. A 7 1/2 inch flower dome has 25 holes for flowers - 12 in an outer circle, 6 in a middle circle and one in the center. These all have holes which go through to the base. The other six are very small holes for flowers which do not have an exit at the base. They are located between the inner 6.

if you look on this page http://www.cloudglass.com/Frogs.htm then the green cloud flower dome in the first picture is 7 1/2 inches in diameter.  The large amber cloud dome is a 10 inch one, which if memory serves we purchased from Bernard.

Regards

Chris
