Title: Czech glass factories and export history
Post by: Sklounion on May 24, 2007, 05:51:38 AM
Hi,
Can anyone please suggest book-titles which explore the economic history of glass exports from Bohemia? (later than Oddy's 1805 tract).
I am particularly interested in histories of the Elbe/Labe as a trade route.
The location of so many Bohemian glassworks close to the rivers, is interesting, (for example, Podebrady, the czech words "pode brady" means below the ford).
One of the major centres for export was the boat-building town of Decin, and the Elbe acted as one or the quickest routes to send goods to the  port of Hamburg, and then on to the rest of the world.
TIA,
Regards,
Marcus

You could try www.abebooks.co.uk (or .com)

Using the keywords czech and glass found several matches:

5000 Years of Glass-making. The History of Glass
Vavra, Jaroslav R.

c.1954 - might be of interest.

Hi David,
Thanks.
Vavra's mammoth tome is a classic, and some fine chromolith plates of historic glass. This was really the first major glass exhibition in Czechoslovakia after the communists seized power, for which Vavra's book was the catalogue.

Do any German members of the board have any suggestions from German authors and publishers?

Thanks,

Marcus
