Title: Butterfly paperweight - Whitefriars base but no signature so....??
Post by: josordoni on June 06, 2007, 03:45:00 PM
I bought this lovely weight even though I couldn't find any signature at all, so I don't know if it IS a WF as it has the right kind of base, or someone else.  Does anyone recognise the design?

I can take better pix if they are needed, I am rushing a bit at the mo.  :-[

thankyou!

Hi Lynne
So far as I can tell it looks genuine - here is a picture of my copy of this weight so you can compare
(http://i15.tinypic.com/5x7tzjs.jpg)
It is worth remembering if Whitefrriars made a trial weight they never put a signature cane in so possibly this was one - or they just forgot to put the cane in
If you can handle the weight it should have the typical Whitefriars button in the base.

Hi Dave, yes the button is right, the facets are all the right size, just the lack of a cane made me wonder.

Emmi kindly guided me to one of the Whitefriars catalogues with the same weight, so it may have been a colour trial I suppose.

I'm pleased with it anyway.  Lovely pink colour.

As stated the butterfly mosaic cane is spot on. What I would say though is that the canes are very striking. COmpared to Dave's example- and butterfly and other mosaic weights that I have which have fairly "boring" standard canes these are quite striking, and may well have been a trial setting. Certainly I have not seen a mosaic with vivid canes like this. This may mean it is quite late.

Lovely weight.

It is very very very pink!!

Blue and amber colours seem to be quite common, I don't think I've seen much that is so exclusively pink.

Anyone who knows anything about paperwaights knows that Whitefriars didn't necerssarily put its monk/date cane in every single one of its paparweights.

People that are still learning need to ask.

Please don't assume that just because I come here to talk about my glass that I purport in any way to be an expert. Why should I be?

Why does your tone always have to be so aggressive ?  Don't you do nice?

I think there's a surfeit of wooden spoons, Oregon pine perhaps?  >:D

Could well be....I don't see the manners that would go with a silver one in evidence.

Maybe if I cast a few spells?

I know some things about paperweights but I wasn't aware that Whitefriars didn't include the cane in them all, that's one of the many reasons I participate in the GMB - to learn things I didn't know. BTW Christine and Lynne, I have a canalware wooden spoon!  >:D

The thing that catches my eye about Jos's weight is that the canes are bundled in hers.

Both weights are very lovely!

I thought I would add to this (rather long ago ...) post that I am clearing out some paperweights, including this dearly loved butterfly.. it will be up on eBay tonight for anyone who might still be interested to see it.

Hi All,
I am always dismayed by examples of a lack of courtesy, especially when the example is based only on "a little knowledge". So dangerous.

Let's recap:-

1) Whitefriars didn't include date canes before they were asked to by the USA distributor. Date canes became the norm for weights that were sold from 1970 onwards.
2) The OWL silhouette is much later than 1970 so would normally have a date cane.
3) Dave is right that setting trials often, but not always, had no date cane.
4) A lot of very nice weights were made in lunch hours and on Saturdays by WF staff (with the full knowledge of the managers), intended for their family and friends. I have several examples where later canes were used with an earlier silhouette to make a really nice weight. Most (buy not all) of these were made without a date cane to signify that they weren't stolen stock.

This weight is therefore either a setting sample or a weight made for the friends and family of a staff member. I would put my money on the latter. the main point however, is that it is a fine and striking weight.

Cheers,

Hi,  just attached an example of a staff weight for friends etc. with an odd silhouette and NO date cane.

Regards,

I am considering selling this weight privately as I have been approached by a member.. would this upset anyone now I have mentioned that I would be auctioning it?

I don't think anyone should be upset...upset maybe they missed the opportuntiy to contact you like the other member did.  Working outside an auction is usually better for both parties anyway. Go for it!

Thank you M, I just felt embarrassed that I said, "here it is " in one breath, and then "no it isn't" in the next.

Like a pantomime!
