Title: hand written label Malta

came across this paperweight with a hand written label

Why would someone put a label on a weight ?
Should i remove it to see the base?
Sorry about the poor pic's, the label say's Lynne Furby 1987 Malta.

The label only had value and information for the original buyer, to remind her of where and when she got it it would seem.  Now you are the owner, it is irrelevant, so I would take it off.

Sue — I disagree with Lynne.   Any provenance could be of value, so should not be lost.   Peel the label from one end to see the base, but leave it attached.

Bernard, I don't know, I see your point, but I think retailers labels are somewhat different somehow from labels attached by the owner after purchase.

I would always leave a retailers label, although I do vary as whether I take owners labels off or not.  If they are unobtrusive I tend to leave them on, but this one is so huge and unattractive, I think I would want it away.

Perhaps it could be peeled off, (assuming it comes off easily - some people use permanent labels, and these only come off with determined soaking and meths or white spirit for the glue...) and kept separately.

Thank you both, i was wondering if under the label is said Mdina, but i doubt it, so for now i will leave it as is.
(unless my curiosity get's the better of me! >:D) the label is stuck firm.

Looks perhaps more Mtarfa than Mdina ???

Hi,
Looks to me that label was put on with the intention of protecting the base of the weight as much as for the information written on it.

Looking at this weight, some considerable time on, I reckon it's Phoenician.
