Title: Monart Looking Signed Glass, But Who? = Henry Dean
Post by: BJB on June 10, 2005, 01:14:22 PM
Hi,

I have picked up this wonderful pink cased bowl with a flat polished base, which has a signature on it. It looks like "H....y D...y" to me

I know its not Monart, but it has a look about it in the colours and the way they streak through the glass.

http://tinypic.com/5v3ciq    bowl (with Murano cat and fake Galle vase)

http://tinypic.com/5v3ey8      base

http://tinypic.com/5v3czb      close up of signature

It is eliptical (I think :? ) and is really heavy

Does anyone know who might have made it and when.

Henry Dean a Belgian glass dealer - these are designed in Belgium and produced in <Estonia/ Latvia/Romania/wherever it is cheapest>
PS. Your cat is Fenton, I believe.

Hi Ivo,

Many thanks, so not worth a lot then?

Cat was a 50p find at a jumble sale and I just love him, looks like mine when he is upset :D

This brings to mind the thread on LSA a few months ago.
Henry Dean produces tastefully coloured glass vessels that have been designed to be easily produced in the cheapest location. In design terms there is nothing particularly creative about his collection, which is derivative. They are good value, well made and given that he recently exhibited at a UK trade show, will probably be all over the department stores soon. So watch out when they end up in the antiques fairs as signed pieces of studio glass, which they are not. Rare? no! Art? no! Nice? Yes!

Hi

Here is globe shaped vase by Henry Dean (needle etched to base) – it’s very deep moss green and mottled/dripped. Ivo says in his book Dean is a Belgian company that had the glass made elsewhere. No dates given or where the glass might have been made (in a deep dark dungeon – well it has that feel).

Are they still up and running?

No worries, Adam... it was quite a way down the pages so not exactly in your face as it were. ;)

Hi Anne,

I don't have the pictures or the bowl either, blooming cat knocked it out of the window about 2 years ago!
