Wow Lesley, those are lovely.
Anyone who is interested in engraving on glass should take a look at Lesley's information sites which show how it is done and videos of her beautiful work.

Wow.  A truly inspirational story Lesley.  I got a real lump in my throat when reading about your flight from Zimbabwe and your sons going to New Zealand...I can picture the scene and how much it must have cost you emotionally.

I also find it very open-hearted that you've put lessons on engraving on your site...there's no need for you to do that, and it's similar to the way the Glass Message Board operates.  Here, it's about dissemination of information and keeping glass, glass workers, their history and individual pieces recognisable for future generations.  My hat is off to you, thank you.  :)

Thanks people. You are all very warm and welcoming. On the personal note, I did only what any mother would do in my position, the best for her kids. They are so well now, one in the army and one a policeman, both still in NZ. There are many moms in the world in a far worse situation and that is what helps me.

Being able to find information about engraving was what I desperately needed for many years in Zimbabwe and all I had was our little quarterly journal from the Guild of Glass Engravers and a couple of books, videos and slides. I LOVE the fact I can help all the budding engravers stuck in remote corners of the world who now contact me almost on a daily basis, privately  - aswell as in my roll as Overseas Correspondent for the Guild of Glass Engravers.

Engraved glass (I mean the serious "stuff") deserves much more recognition than it gets, there are some very talented engravers out there, some have recently died unfortunately, but their work makes mine look drab and commercial. (well I have to make a living with it and commercial makes up a big part of my work).

News of today is that a piece I submitted for the Glass Sellers Prize has made the Long List. Hold thumbs for the short list out end of next week.

VERY best of luck Lesley, and I think you are too modest...  Your work is beautiful, you can try as hard as you can to teach others your techniques, but they have to have your talent as well.

Pieces like your purple cameo bowl stand up perfectly well against the work of the major Art Deco makers, IMHO.  One day, I will be rich and famous, and then I'll treat myself!   ;D

Thanks Saorsa for those compliments, mere mortals indeed! ;D....oh by the way I have just got an email that went something like this:
"On behalf of the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers I have the pleasure to inform you that you have been short listed for the Glass Sellers Engraved Award 2007 and therefore are invited to compete in the final judging. "
Photos are also on my NEWS page of my website.  ;D ;) ;D My little bugs are going to be famous!!

  Oh wow hello!! Lovely to see Charlotte again too!

I have been asked to give info for a CV on me and my work and part of it is a list of "collections" and those with them. After 24 years you have got to be joking!! I know several people have bought several pieces both in Africa , here and USA, and people at Cambridge Glass Fair who come from who knows where, I have not kept records , apart from invoices somewhere amoungst the hundreds of invoices??.  I only have records of my general bespoke commissions.

When is someone considered a "collector"?? When they have more than one piece?

OH yes I will be at Cambridge again, my 7th time I think. I am usually on table C9 in the Contemporary Hall. Would love to meet all fellow Glass Messagers and mine's a cappuccino with one sugar pleeeese  >:D ;)

Lesley — You can't stop there!   I've been trying to figure out which fritillary you chose, and was it a raft spider?   You can't leave bug twitchers in such suspense.   Please can we have a full list.

ps — we took our daughter Abi to see the Whistler windows at Moreton about two weeks ago — she was amazed.   I find you see more each time you go.   It's interesting comparing the techniques used.   See here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,3601.0.html).

Hi Bernard,   ;D bug twitchers ;D is that the official name for those what love bugs??  Bernard, I have to go through all my photos and names and draw up a proper list and will post it here. The spider is a Ladybird Spider Eresus...that is the photo name, I will check it on my list to get it absolutely correct. Just have no time at the mo.
Hopefully tomorrow...will also comment on Whistler and all his books, his son, their work , and the glass I HAVE!!!!!!!!!! :chky:

Lesley — If you do post information on Whistler, please would you be so kind as to add it to the existing topic or start a new topic, rather than post it here.   So that it's all in one place.   I have in mind our overworked and underpaid moderators, bless them!    Any ideas on my latest query, which I have posted on the existing Whistler topic here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,3601.0.html)?

I look forward to seeing you at Cambridge.   We are on stand 60.   Look for the Clanger (if I've not sold it).

Lesley, the Clangers and especially the soup dragon, were fundamental to an English childhood.  ;D

They seem very cute indeed and it would be nice if children of today could carry such memories through their lives. Pity about copyright, I would have fun creating this little world on some crystal for all the Clanger twitchers out there :D

Lesley — You were right, except that it's a unique glass Clanger, inspired by the children's characters, created by Iestyn Davies of Blowzone about five years ago.   And it's sufficiently different not to have to worry about copyright.   It's one of several spectacular examples of his work from this period that I will be offering at Cambridge.
