Title: Whitefriars aubergine bark - cut down 9"?
Post by: josordoni on September 10, 2007, 05:51:51 PM
I've put this on Whitefriars Is It?  but thought I'd pop it on here too.

I'm not sure about the colour on this piece, it seems a bit bright and purplish, but I have seen pics of aubergine bark vases that seem this bright.  However my main wonder is if it is a 9 inch cut right down to 7.5" to get rid of a nasty crack - there is still a small triangular nick to one side, but maybe the original chop merchant took it to 7.5 to try to pretend it is a smaller one?  If it is Whitefriars then there is no doubt it is cut down - the proportions are all wrong and the top is cut and ground flat.

But I have also seen other vases similar but ground, attributed to various other houses.

What do you think?

height is now 7.5 ins 190 mm, diameter at the base is 4 ins 100 mm.

Would it have been this height originally Ivo, or is it cut down do you think?
