Hi, i have a huge opalescent charger with a pattern of pheasants marked verlux france, any info on this maker would be appreciated as i can't seem to find any info other than it was a trade name used by etling or maybe verlys, thanks
-
Noted circa 1935 in Hartmann as a wholesaler S.P.I.P. Établissements, Paris. Glass they sold was was made by Verrerie Les Andelys Holophane SA and also in Czechoslovakia. No way of finding out who made your piece without a picture of the piece.

thanks for the reply, i've tried to download a photo but it didn't work, however there is an identical piece on ebay, item 200156879887, hope that helps

That one seems to have been priced as Etling rather than unknown 8)

SPIP was on the Czech glass and Verlux on Verrerie Les Andelys Holophane SA.

Decelle, Philippe. Opalescence, Le verre moulé des années 1920-30
Cappa, Giuseppe. LÉurope de l'art Verrier

No other marks shown as used on Etling.

Listing as Holophane might bump the price up ;)

Cappa in 'Le Genie Verrier de l'Europe' suggests that Verlux was an Etling mark. This appears to be based on spurious reasoning; as I understand Etling was a retailer whose commissions were made at Choisy le Roi or Sevres, so is unlikely to have commisioned pieces under a different name. I believe the attribution is based on the similarity of a pinecone pattern found on a Verlux tray with that seen on a known Etling vase; hardly conclusive given that Verlys and Jobling to name but two also produced similarly themed conifer patterns. The Etling/ Verlux myth has, however, since been repeated many times on ebay descriptions, etc.
The Verlux pieces I have handled, however, were of similar quality of finish to Choisy le Roi production, so I wouldn't be surprised if they produced some pieces marked Verlux. Holophane produced Verlys glass and I am not aware of any association with Verlux, though my knowledge in this area is hardly exhaustive. Certainly the finishing and feel of Verlux glass differs from that seen on most Verlys production. I don't have Decelle's 'Opalescence le Verre Moule des Annees 1920-30' immediately to hand but from what I recall it simply illustrates some Verlux production with no information as to who might have made it.

thanks Anne for the info on posting a photo, i will remember this for the future. back to the main question, from what's been said sofar, am i right in believing that some " makers " never actually made their own glass but got other glassworks to make it and then put their own name on the glass, if that is so, how can we ever be certain who did actually make it, confused or what!!!! i certainly am, i look forward to the next instalment, cheers all

It is a very common practice in the glass world and always has been, I suppose. All you need is a desk and a telephone ;) Obviously others go further, Jules Lang, Markhbein, Hill Ouston... it is a looonnngg list.
