Title: Large iridescent glass orb on glass stand id help please
Post by: Pat on October 01, 2007, 06:27:36 PM
I love this. It looks just like Royal Brierley. It is 5.5" tall and in diameter and fixed to the black glass stand. I have no idea why it was made, and what for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It looks like a Phoenician (or something similar) paperweight fixed to a much earlier plinth (not a Bagley one), I'd try some gentle soaking in water, they might just part company.

I don't think it's a paperweight because it's not heavy and thats the dimensions of the ball not including the stand. Obviously hollow. It really is a dead ringer for Brierley with a surface finish.

Ask Bernard to have a look, the stand might be a good starting point

It does look like the Royal Brierley (designed by Isle of Wight Studio Glass), but the stand does not belong to it at all. (IMNSHO).

I'd try unsticking them too. (gently!)

I appreciate it's a marriage but I still would like yo find out why anyone wopuld make a large ball like that-unless it's lampshade with the open end glued on the stand.

Christmas tree bauble?
Ornamental "fishing float"?
or, as you suggest, lampshade.

It could be a lampbase, but I'd have expected the open end to be deeper and more 'splayed out' than would fit in that base.  The finish on the glass looks kind of modern too, doesn't it?   Only one way to find out exactly what it is Pat....   :o
