Title: Italian Bottle..
Post by: antiquerose123 on November 04, 2007, 07:25:47 AM
Hi.  I have this bottle that says it was made in Italy.  Pic of the front and back.

There is a gold label on the bottom that says:        Made in Italy
                                                                      AUTRUCHE
                                                                    VARIETES INC
                                                                MONTREAL CANADA
                                                                       H4E 3S5

I (think) maybe it was for a Wine.....BUT what confuses me, there appears to be a regular light-bulb inside it.  Yet I there are no cords, wires, or even any holes in it. It was obviously made that way, but why, and for what?  I am sure it is a light bulb inside it, as that is what it looks like.  Any information on this, year, or value ?

Thanks in advance...

Try removing the Lions head - must be a hole behind it, and add a photo of the fitting. Someone might have done it for fun as the Lion is really at odds with the ship.

You think it would be OK to remove that piece -- as this is the way I got it....but like you said maybe there is a hole behind it for a cord I guess.....but it still must have been made this way, as I see no damage if the Light bulb (which looks like it inside) if it was added at a later date.  As nothing is wrong with the base.....so I could not think of how one would put a light bulb inside this, if it was something like an oginal bottle of wine....

One of life mysteries....I will wait to hear your advice, IF it is OK to remove the lion head for sure...

Thxs

P.S.
I know Santa is bringing me a new camera, so hopefully my pics after Dec.  25 are better, and I may re-take some photos to enter into the the gallery page, and then hopefully I will also be able to get closer shots of things like the label on this item here (etc...)

yes....I peeked under the Lion head, and there is a hole behind it, about the size of the lion head itself....the edges are ground....

I thought it looked like a light bulb inside, BUT there is not a light bulb at all....it was the the curvature of the inside glass that made it look like a light bulb inside...

Now I am confused more.....why the hole in the side at all.....or what would that be for....

I will post a pix later, as I am supremely sick with a *high-fever* right now.....Just thought I would update you verbally for now...

I peeked behind the Lion head, and there is a hole there....it seems to be a professionally done hole, as edges are no rough....so more confused :spls:  so what kind of bottle would have a hole on the side...unless there was one mightly big cork in there at once......confused

Hi

I finally   :-\ got a close-up of the label on the bottom of this bottle with this new camera.  Any ideas yet on this ?  I do not know if you would like to *ADD* it to your label page, or not....

If you want to.....your welcome to use this label in your gallery.

Thanks

Modified:  Added a close-up of the boat on it... ;)

Brilliant, thanks Rose. I've added the label into Italian non-Murano here: http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-9104 credited to you. :)

looks like someone has cut out a picture and stuck it over the piece, as it looks like paper, it's main purpose was as an olive oil pourer

But why a hole in the side, Ray?   That's a puzzle...

Rose, is the hole just a hole, or is it access to a separate compartment within the bottle? I'm wondering if it was meant to keep something else in separate from the main bottle contents?  Like those ice-pouches we saw in the Nazeing jugs a while ago...

Maybe olive oil and balsamic vinagar? Assuming that it is a separate section, of course.  :chky:

Do you have a picture/link to those *Nazeing jugs?*  And maybe I will put some water to see what happens.  Good suggestion Carolyn Preston...will try water

Rose have a look at this topic where they were discussed and there's a pic to an ice-pouch jug: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,8347.0.html

All I can say to you Ann is B-I-N-G-O. Yes the hole in the side must be for putting ice in. I said in my very first post that it looked there was a light bulb inside, and was confused....  When you look down from the top, the inside of the bottom makes it look like a bulb (the curve, actually look convex from the top ).  Even when I first opened it the little lion head door on the side, and (merely) peeked inside.....and saw just glass...never noticed it, as it like an *optical illusion* when you look....it just looks like the bottle itself...

I was a little confuse as to why when I looked down the top (with no light from the lion head door when not open -- HONEST -- you would swear there was a bulb there...I guess it is the direction, light, etc to perceive that.

But NO -- the side where the lion head IS a round additional pocket for whatever.  That is neat, Never saw that before...Mystery solved, now if we could find a link on the web to see further info, and why..

You won Ann, mystery solved....I would have (and obviously) never would have figured that out.  I would be still thinking it was a lamp base....even my son was fooled.  THANKs :hiclp: :hiclp:

It would be a jug for white wine with a pocket for ice. A great big jar of wine doesn't look very good on your table and hard to cool...

*click the light bulb* goes on in my head...

And see, when you look down the mouth of the bottle...and as when I started this post, I thought it looked like a light bulb inside, but see....so when you look down the mouth....it IS the curved part of the pocket within the bottle that a person is seeing....so that it why it looked like a *light bulb* to me...

But Ann figured it out...bravo Ann, bravo....and thanks again :hiclp: :hiclp:
