Title: Wave Crest Jewelry Casket...
Post by: antiquerose123 on November 12, 2007, 05:51:41 AM
Hi, I have a Wave Crest Jewelry Casket.  It is approx 4 x 4 w/hinged lid with hand painted florals, and some enameling.  Silk lining in good condition.  I was told that the fact it retains the original (top and bottom) lining is excellent in regards to value.

It has the original red stamped Wave crest on the bottom, and has the original paper label on it.  Any confirmation of age/value/and maker?  Any other information.

Thanking you in advance...

Hi Della.

Thanks for the reply, and great site you posted. My Wave Crest is a *heirloom* piece of my family.  As noted in my pics, mine is stamped, and also has a sticker on it.  Not sure if that is the original price tag, (or label for maker ??) or what, as it is hard to read.

I can see any maker's mark on it, and I do not know where this could be found anyway  :-\

I do know that *Collectors* love it when they have retained their original silk lining -- in which mine does, on both the top & bottom.  It has lost some of its color, but what can one expect.  Must be doing something right to preserve it ( by not taking it out much...lol )

I JUST love it, and they must have been so elegant when new...

Rose

Hi, I thought I would bump this with some new information found.......about this decorated Opal ware and that C. F. Monroe Company was one of the largest producers of this type glass.  Height of its popularity from 1890 to 1910.

* BUMP -- Just adding some Updated Photos, and better ones of this item...as other pics were from a Cell Phone  :nk:*

No sure if these are called Wave Crest (2 words) or WaveCrest (1 word)....anyhow, just some better pics.  I am surprised that I have not seen more of these on the Board. I thought everyone wanted one of these......maybe not ?

Glad mine still has the original SILK Lining it, for how many years old it is.  It has not deteriorated yet --  :X: :X:  as I am even afraid to wash it at all, so it has not been washed for many, many years -- so some dust on it.  But I still love it...

Hope the New Pics are better -- so just ignore this post, if you wish.... ;D

I don't think they turn up much in Europe Rose, though there are US collectors.

C.F. Monroe Wave Crest is fairly popular over here & they made just about everything, powder jars, vases, bowls, etc. Price guides are worthless when it comes to Wave Crest though as C.F. Monroe produced alot of glass & while books carry high values the truth is that most pieces these days average under $100 USD unless they are special. Kelva & Nakura marked pieces (specialized) do the best. Little trinket boxes such as yours run around $100-$125 if they are mint with the silk intact, the clash works & the decoration is 99% intact. The C. F. Monroe firm did the decorating and the marketing of these high quality pieces, but they did not make the glass. The opal glass was generally made at the Rodefer Glass Co. in Bellaire, Ohio. The Rodefer firm survived about 100 years, mostly on "private mould" or special order business; they even made dental bowls (aka "spit sinks"), and Fenton Art Glass still does this from time to time using the moulds that originated at Rodefer.

Yeah & I knew better than to use "produce", but simply was not paying attention when replying. Monroe also used some imported blanks & a supposedly Mt. Washington did some blank work for them. For years I've been trying to pin down whose mold was used for the huge heavy standing  bear bookends (?) they (Rodefer) poured. I had one once & they are really tough to find. Ken

Just thought I would add this here, that there is a really nice Wave-crest (glass) on Ebay  [HERE]  (http://cgi.ebay.com/370512772917?clk_rvr_id=235936196559)  The satin inside it gone, but the designs on the outside are really nice.

Is it just us North American people that like this type of Vintage Glass?  :huh2:

Rose when it comes to Wavecrest...its U.S. & the only real interest is U.S. based. I can add an example of "interest"...Mdina fish vases draw a great deal of interest in Europe while here there is almost zero interest. There was one (teal blue/green) in my mall, signed although not Michael Harris, it was another guy who worked along side him & it just sold for $80 after sitting there, properly identified for over two years & the original price was $250. Just depends on where you are & what you like. Ken

Hi Ken:

Yes I understand that -- but because of this board I now expand looking for other items too.  Be it Czech glass, or my first piece of WF, and the Mdina Birds that I have.  This board has helped me to expand my desires for different types of glass --- so if this works for me -- then (maybe) I can help expand interest of Wavecrest to others over the pond too.

It is all Glass, and I bet they can find some good deals $$ over the Pond since Wavecrest is less of a collectible glass over there.

I just hope we all expand-our-horizons when it comes to collecting glass.  All for the love of it...

Rose I can respond to that by simply saying two words "shipping costs". I'd have more than a few Walther figural flower frogs IF (note caps) shipping was affordable, but when you add the costs of shipping...well that does that & I'm far, far, far from being alone here in the U.S in that regard. Thats life in the big city. Ken

Many people tend to collect what can be found in their own country and only then move on to buying from abroad. A fair amount of imported American glass (I bought a piece of Heisey Winged Scroll just this week) is found over here but I can't say I've ever seen any Wavecrest.

There were at least two U.S. companies that had showrooms & sold inventory in London from the late 20's right up to WWII, Cambridge & Tiffin. Not sure about Heisey, but wouldn't suprise me since the other two were there. Tiffin's Gold line in Royal Blue was a hit in London during the 30's & sold very well. Cambridge flower frogs did decently well & so did their general line of opaques, Ivory, Primrose, Helio, Jade & Azurite.

Yes, because of the Board here I have heard names of Mdina, and WF -- which I had never heard of before.  So now I lookout for those items since over the pond you guys know so much about them.  I am just assuming that IF you ever see some Wavecrest at a sale, or on the Net for a good price -- you too are now familiar with them......we can branch out into so many different glass pieces from different areas of the world.

Thanks to this board -- I have learned about others -- as others have learned about Wavecrest over there!!  So might be worth snagging a piece if, and when you find a piece over there.

I love my piece -- and since it still has *both* the top and the bottom silk  in it!!
