Title: Blue green Float bowl.. ID= Davidson S696D
Post by: selina on December 02, 2007, 11:48:51 PM
Hi all,

Hopefully my heading says most of what I want to know.

The colour of this bowl attracted me and I thought of Davidson cloud glass when I saw the shape but of course it isnt cloud glass. Ive looked on a few Davidson and Walther websites and they both made this similar style, but I didnt find any of theirs listed in a solid colour. Any other suggestions as to who it might be? I bought it as a float bowl so if anyone can confirm that and let me know whether it just has a frog or frog and centrepiece?
It measures 24cm across the top by 9.5cm high.

Hi Trudy
I would say Davidson. I have some examples of these bowls in non cloud colours. Take a look at www.cloudglass.com this site has a lot of info about Davidson glass in general.

Looks like a Davidson to me, although I can't spot the model number at a quick glance. Davidson didn't make centrepieces but a bowl like this probably had a domed frog and maybe a plinth. Davidson seems to have made many of its designs over many years and in whatever colour, cloud or plain, was fashionable. I suspect the teal was more toward the middle of the 20th century

Thanks Tony, Christine. I had a look at that site. Walther apparently made one in a similar style too.

Christine I just could NOT describe the colour properly...TEAL !!! THANK YOU :)

Hi,

it is a Davidson S696D and judging by the colour a post WWII version., probably early 1960s.

Hi Chris,

Thanks! Ive had a look through your cloud glass site again. I couldnt get a few pages to load yesterday. My computer!
Comparing the colours, you have a 10/1910 pattern which has an example in the same colour as my bowl. Antique blue its described as. Date introduced 1935. So would this colour have been earlier than 60's? I put the pics up together and compared the colours.

I would go with Chris' date estimate. Davison made many of their designs for 20 or 30 years, over 30 years in the case of the 10/1910!!! The colours changed with the times though and that blue is a 60s sort of blue

Hi Trudy,

Antique green and antique blue are both 1960s colours. Antique green was introduced in 1964, antique blue was introduced in the same year I think.

Thanks again. :)
Now the hunt for the frog is on..either that or I'll just leave the lady sitting in it that I have. Not a match, Sowerby lady and Davidson bowl, but they seem to like each other anyway.
