Post by: Omega on December 08, 2007, 11:17:29 AM
Would a Caithness Comet, dated 1977, no. 206/3000 be worth buying ? Been offered to me for $500 - does anyone know if this is reasonable or not ??

According to the Charlton catalogue the OIP was £ 25 and the estimate in 2004 £ 75 or $ 135 respectively. On ebay only very rarely the 2004 estimates are exceeded nowadays - often you can get Caithness weights for half the estimate, especially the abstract ones. Comet had an edition size of 3'000.

If you look at my completed items, I have had quite a few of Caithness Colin Terris Space themed early limited edition paperweights recently, complete with silk lined boxes and certificates.  These are late 1970s early 80s weights, edition sizes from 1500 to 3000.  The average price has been about £40-50 so I would say that your offered price is way way way over what you could expect to pay on ebay for an immaculate weight.

$500 for Comet, sweet Beeteljuice  :o

The last two sold on Ebay went for £44 (November 06) and £29 (May 07).

Item 150193551534 is available now and currently is bid free at £1 plus postage.
