Title: Stained glass, Kansas City, Missouri...........
Post by: Patrick on January 03, 2008, 07:10:21 PM
Hi,
Tomorrow morning I am off on a trip to Kansas City to view some Powell windows designed by my Grandfather James Hogan. It is going to be very strange to stand at the foot of the window that my grandfather took the measurements of some 79 years ago. I will take some pics. and link them to this post.
Here is a link to an article by Randal Loy.

Hi, Well it is some weeks since my visit and I am working on a video of the windows.
There are 7 windows in all , a set of 6 in the chancel and one at the East end of the South wall. They were delivered in July 1930 and the installation by Powell and Son workers was completed on September 15, 1930.
Here is an image of the 7th window and a detail showing the quality and beauty of the work.
 Regards Patrick.

Hi Patrick What a touching story almost had me in tears but when it came to the description of you it turned to tears of laughter,Just a thought my old Mucker a couple of years back Pinky and my everso humble self had a look thru the archives at my local Museum there are boxes full of W/Fs stuff including Powell some of it looks like untouched for years, any possibility what you are looking for could have found its way there.Just a thought,i would love another rummage thru it again with you and perhaps RAY. Regards John.

Hi, I am so glad you liked these images.
Today I was at the Museum of London photoraphing the Whitefriars 1931-35 design book and during a chat with Alex Werner,( the curator ) he mentioned that they had finally found a home for the 1700 or so Stained glass window cartoons that they have. They are shortly to be shipped to the Corning Museum of Glass, NY. In this collection are the cartoons for the windows for Grace and Holy Trinity. James Hogan,s original designs are still to be found.
I am uploading 3 more images. The first is Mary kneeling with Joseph holding a cage of doves. The second is a detail of the doves and the third the Powell ( Whitefriars ) Monk in the bottom right hand tracery.
  Regards Patrick.

Whilst it is good that they will be preserved, Patrick, I find it sad they are being shipped out of the UK. Isn't it a shame that they cannot be kept properly here and displayed accordingly. I wonder why we don't value our design heritage in the same way as our American cousins clearly do?

Fabulous pics by the way. :)

Basically no-one of importance in the upper Museum service management is a glass researcher. Last one at the V&A was Charleston. Scotland has been a bit luckier in the recent past, particularly Brian Blench (retired), Simon Cottle (Now in auction trade) and Shiona Airlie. Not forgetting Wendy Evans (Still there?) at London Museum.

Glass is largely dealt with by ceramics curators as a side job. How on earth the V&A got its glass gallery is puzzling... at least until you visit and find it has little to teach due the the jumbled display :( But it fits in with being a groovy gallery if you ignore the objects contained. Contemporary glass is better described but an odd selection that fails to explore the UK growth of Studio Glass.

Patrick, that is fabulous. What superb windows and the music is lovely, well done on a beautiful video.

Just as a thought, has anyone written a book on Whitefriars stained glass yet?

Patrick, what wonderful windows, I especially love the way the female faces are painted.  I make small stained glass panels as a hobby but I can't imagine the number of hours it must have taken to produce these windows from the design stage through to installation.  I have emailed the link for your video to my friend who helps restore church windows, I know she will love it too.
