Hi All, can anyone help ID or age this paperweight. It is a little smaller than the usual size and has a star cut into base.Thanks very much!

It's one of many variations on the early Perthshire Paperweights PP1 design. There's another currently on eBay (but maybe not with a star-cut base) which is described as "Monart / Vasart". These are also sometimes hard to separate from the equivalent design from Strathearn (which, of course, is where PP developed from). But with a star-cut base, it's 99% sure to be a PP weight.

The star cut does look exactly like the (one) of the PP bases. But I always understood that all PP1 would have a 1-1-2-2 formation outside the two centre rings, similarly as a PP2 has a 1-2-2 formation. KevH do you mind to elaborate?
Jean you say it is slightly smaller than other weights, what are the dimensions?

Good point, Karel. I really should not make quick replies when I ought to be in bed sleeping!
In this case, it could be that size matters. If it is 2.5 inch diameter, then my thoughts below may be in the right direction. If it's "small" (2 inch diameter), or "miniature", then perhaps it's a nice example of a previously unrecorded design??
I think it might be a PP5 (from 1969 to 1971) because of the amber, star-cut base. But yes, the simple "1-1" pattern does not fit into the weights illustrated in books. However, the Mahoney / McClanahan book clearly shows that the PP5 was one of Perthshire's "variation on a theme" weights.

Looking at the canes they seem like old/early canes (given that the star base convinces us that it is Perthshire). I have a sense that there may be "many" weights around that were not really produced in large numbers but were experimental and therefore not given a number.
The other thought is that it might be worth looking at who else did a star cut base? Unfortunately my meagre collection of books don't give much on the subject of base cuttings.

My immediate thought without looking in detail was PP1 - look at the preponderence of radial twists. BUT then the cane set-up is only 1-1 suggesting the piece is unlikely to be large (3 inch dia) so could it be a pp2 variation?
Problem is pp2 doesn't have a star cut base (ordinarily!!)
The 'simple star cut' base is similar to that shown on the patterned pp10.
Then you've got an amber translucent cushion - this was the standard colour variation on pp5, but the set-up looks more like a pp6!!
So it could be it's unlikely to be pp1 or a pp2 but could be a pp5 or a pp6!!
At least the dates likely to be limited to pre 1977, and most likely pre 1972.

Star cuts (of that kind) seem to be limited to PP4, PP5, PP6 and PP10. It definitely matches my PP10's cut. From what I can find it does seem that that type of starcut was abandoned early.
Where are the cane specialists...anybody recognize the canes from other weights?
