Title: MILLEFIORI BASKET WEIGHT
Post by: josordoni on February 03, 2008, 11:55:41 AM
Am I right in thinking this is called a basket?
Is it most likely Murano?
Is there a likely maker?

It's rather odd the way the pink canes run out half way round  - I wonder if they just run out!!   :huh:

http://www.cowtown.net/mikefirth/gloswts.htm (http://www.cowtown.net/mikefirth/gloswts.htm) states
Quote
BASKET
(a) an outer row of millefiori canes, pulled together underneath the motif to form a staved enclosure for the decorative element(s);
(b) a latticino ground pulled down in the center (as in St. Louis and American fruit weights);
(c) a latticino ground with a "handle" of twisted filigree extending above the motif.
So - I would call this a basket weight - according to (b).
I would also go for Murano - but don't dare name potential makers.
Best regards - Wolf

It looks like Seguso to me.

Interesting  ;D - can you tell me what it is about the weight that suggests that?

thanks!

The 'toothy' canes are similar to Fratelli Toso but Seguso's are not as crisp. They look more flowy to me.

Thanks Truffle, interesting!  I presume Seguso would be more desirable than Toso too...?

Actually I don't know the answer to that.  :) For me as a collector, I like both.

Were you the one that had the flower murrini weight(very large canes with red around the outside of them) a while back? I have since discovered that was Seguso. I saw one with the same canes with a Seguso label.

My ID of your present weight is not 100% positive but it is based on the way the canes look.

hmmmm I don't know... to be honest I have such a lot of millefiori Murano weights over the last while, with a variety of cogs, daisies, large flowers - I get lost....only one I really remember is the delicious little Venini I had!  I wish I still had him....  :cry:

  Thanks for even an approximation - it is not that important, I think most of the time people buy because they like the look of something.  I just find it interesting.
