Title: Outrageously Large Cased Vase
Post by: horochar on February 07, 2008, 01:47:21 PM
If it's a vintage piece, it's a small miracle it survived intact without being knocked over and broken.  Any thoughts as to maker and vintage?  Is it even Murano (versus Scandi)?
Thanks,
Charles.

Charles, I moved this Murano vs Scandinavian vase to the Glass Forum, as it will get more varied audience here - hope that's ok with you.   :)

A bigger picture and base shot would help.

My guess is Swedish (Aseda) although the colour is non typical - or Belgian. This size is called a floor vase.

I'm sure we've had one similar on here before but I can't think where to start looking

This type of vase is often called a pencil stem or pencil neck vase. The vase is similar to Carlo Moretti's line, but the ones I have seen by Moretti have all had pedestal bases and satino finishes, though they may have made other finishes. This vase appears to be glossy in the pictures.

After writing that last message, I checked my Italian Glass book by Leslie Pina. There are some vases that are made by Carlo Moretti on page 48. Some of these vases are glossy and do not have a pedestal base. A couple of the styles have a slightly flared lip, as yours does. Perhaps you can check vases made by Carlo Moretti to see if you can find one that has the same characteristics and dimensions. I would say there is a good chance your vase was made by them.

Eureka!  I found it hiding in plain sight on page 135 of Leslie Pina's Italian Glass book, listed as "extreme 1960s" vase.  Extreme indeed.  Unfortunately, no attribution to manufacturer given.
N.B. I think her values are optimistic.

Charles, just for interest, how tall is it please?

I know what you mean about hiding in plain sight. I have so many books, but often forget to look in them for answers. Pina's values are usually pretty realistic for Moretti's satinato pieces, though eBay values can be mighty low. I think your vase is a beautiful shade of green. Carlo Moretti had some great colors.

I had quite a strong feeling it was Carlo Morreti glass but then i do have about thirty pieces of the Maestros work most with labels but some hand signed.

It would be nice to establish definitively that it's Moretti, but whether or not it is, I am glad to know it is a vintage 1960s piece.  It has lasted 40 years, despite its dangerous design.  I've cat-proofed it, as best I could, by placing it between the buffet and side table in the dining room.

Someone on the Murano board had a Moretti set he wanted to have verified. He emailed the company and they wrote him back right away. Maybe they would do the same for your vase -- definitely worth a try if you want a definite attribution. I bet it is Moretti, even if Leslie didn't attribute it to them.
