Another purchase at Newark, another mystery to me....
Some age but probably post-war...
Opinions would be appreciated

My wild guess would read something as follows:
Bohemian....modern copy...depends what the base looks like.
-
Was a highly polished flat base. Some ware which leads me to think its most likely 1950's/1960's - it gives that sort of feel. (don't ask me what i mean though, or how to describe my feelings! I have around 1000 paperweights all sorts of bits and pieces and this feels to be period but clearly post-war).
Either way, I like it and at £4.00 I can't complain - building up a nice collection of lepidoptera!!!
-
That was a fantastic price! I have seen very very boring (sorry Royal Crest ) Taiwanese going for more than that!
-
The lampwork is amazing - its like really good quality victorian glass beadwork. The butterfly wings have a gossamer quality, the antenna and legs are connected to the body - if its modern I want the name of the maker NOW!!!!!
-
It doesn't have that right-now look-feel to it does it? But like you, no idea of maker... :spls:

I have one or two of the 'bohemian copies' particularly the new faceted types - the guy that I bought it from said it came from a house clearance about 3 years ago and had been sat in his shed ever since. It wasn't out on display, he had a few picture weights which I looked at, then said this might interest. He started at £5.00 and I cheekily made him an offer - he was reluctant to sell though!!!
Newark was dead on Friday - even though the weather was glorious! I picked up about 10 paperweights and the most I paid was £60.00 combined for three murano double overlays with millefiori concentric cushions.
My best buy was the Strathearn 'experimental' and I also liked the other unknown Scottish weight - both shown on seperate threads!!

... beadwork.
Those are bubbles but clearly intentional.
-
not bubbles (although there are bubbles formed on the surface of the coloured glass) it's much more like a minute cotton twist or corkscrew effect...
whatever the design/construction its uber good!!
