Title: Early English/Bohemian or something else?
Post by: Tigerchips on February 17, 2008, 10:48:49 PM
Nice big bowl for you.  ;D

I wonder if the base is original? I love the way they've worked the glass to make eight grooves around the top of the rim. Also, the quality seems good and it rings like a bell. It's white on the outside but a sort of light green on the inside. The rim is black but fades to brown then light green. When held up to the light it shows a red colour. It's 11 inches diameter so quite big.
It seems to have a nicely polished pontil despite the fact that you can't see the pontil when the base is on.  8)

Any ideas?

Thanks Tony.

Pics of the base bottom will help.

I think i've changed my mind about the polished pontil, it may have been nicely snapped off. I'll let you decide.

Here's a pic of the metal base. It's very tinny and not very heavy or thick. There's a lot of rust on the bolt too.

The base will date from 1930s to 50s

Perhaps Art Deco then... would you say that was an art deco decoration around the rim? The stripes usually come in three's when it's art deco though.

As far as the metalwork is concerned, not Art Deco, similar designs would be found much earlier but made in a different way.

No idea on the glass.

No i didn't think the base was Art Deco. I wonder if it's been part of a larger centrepiece? It appears as if the base has either been ground flat or has been stored without it's base as there is a flat area around the pontil.

It looks like the base of an epergne set married to a much later metal stand. Does the light green have the uranium factor, probably not but...

No uranium content.  :)
