Title: Whitefriars sunspot ashtray?
Post by: wesley on March 10, 2008, 08:29:19 PM
Hello,

I bought this a couple of weeks ago on eBay and I wondered if anyone could give me any more information about it.

I am pretty sure it is by Whitefriars as the sunspot fits identically over the one on the ashtray and all lines match

The ashtray is very large measuring 10 1/4" wide by 1 3/4" tall and nearly 1" thick and is a dark grey blue colour.

The ashtray looks to of been mould blown as there are no mould lines on it.

Does anyone recognise it as a production piece or could it be a one off or something completely different?

Best wishes and thank you in advance,

Wes

Hi. Somewhere on www.whitefriars.org these are discussed. They are not made by Whitefriars .
Sorry I can not give you more info.

Patrick's right that they were discussed there but other than they aren't Whitefriars, no conclusion was reached as to maker as far as I can tell. JP did suggest they may be Eric Hoglund for Boda, perhaps someone can tell if that's a possibility?

I'd be very surprised if it was a Hoglund piece, one is almost a direct copy of the other and if it is'nt WF I find it difficult to imagine an internationally respected designer/company being quite that blatant! In recent times at least....

Unless they were copying a symbol from earlier days ie if two companys were making a sphinx they should look quite similar but the size may be different. It was only a thought because several Whitefriars workers said it wasnt Whitefriars in their opinions and i know Hogland was quite prolific with ashtrays with symbols.

Fair point JP,

Still looks a lot larger than the Hoglund ashtrays I've had?

It is interesting looking closely at the impression in each of the pieces. The ashtray has a very solid impression as if it had set whilst on the mould and therefore is very bold. The impression on the sun spot looks as if in production it was impressed whilst the glass was still viscous, therefore having time to soften. This may accounts for the variation in the wiggles on the sun's rays.

The sun spot does overlay it exactly the ashtray

(Sorry for the lack of glass manufacturing technical terms - although I have a degree in materials science and my specialism was in glass it still didn’t prepare me for glassmessages.com!!)
