Title: Green Jug & Glasses,
Post by: Gilead on March 12, 2008, 07:40:30 PM
Hi
Another set of glasses and jug green with ridge ring's inside, but smooth outside, the jug stands 8ins tall and the glasses 4.5ins high, are these from the 50s maybe and do many people collect these, also should there have been six glasses to the set.

Any ideas whom made these please,
                                             steve

A nice looking set, I'm afraid I can't help with maker though.

They could be 50s or maybe earlier, they have a bit of a 30s look to them, it would be interesting to check if they were Uranium glass.

There probably would have been six glasses, though this is not always the case. Jobling, for example, catalogued their 4050 Lozenge pattern set as consisting of a jug, a tray and three tumblers.

Looking again, I think Christine is right, they are probably not Uranium. As far as I know the only way to tell would be to use a UV light.

I would expect to catch a hint of uranium in the picture in sunlight. You sort of lose the definition of the edges, it's hard to explain but once you know what you're looking for. I reckon I'm right 70% of the time if I can decide.

Steve, some sets were made with 4 glasses and some with 6. The best way to tell is to fill the jug using one of the glasses. If it takes four glassfuls you know it probably had 4 originally, if it takes six glassfuls then most likely it had 6 glasses. (I've used this on my water sets to see if I have the right number of tumblers and it always seems to work!) 8)
