Corrrr I love this piece, stunning chink to it and again absolutely no idea of maker.  Now then is tazza, compote, comport exactly the same thing but just named different in other countries?

Basically yes, Jen. Just different names (in Italian, French and English respectively I think) for the same sort of object, although styles vary slightly, they all mean a curved plate/dish on a stand. Some of them are deeper and lidded, others shallower and open, as against a totally flat plate on a stand which would be a cakestand. :)
