Title: Id needed please for Huge uranium glass vase
Post by: Littleblackhen on March 31, 2008, 04:12:35 PM
I have been buying at auction and have found this gorgeous, wondrous, huge asymetrical vase.

I am really curious to know who made it, and when it dates from.  It fluoresces under ultra violet light, which I always thought meant it dated pre ww2, but the style looks later to me?

It is 17" from tip to tip, 5.5" across at the widest point and 7" tall at the highest point.

Here are some pictures of my latest love :)

Hmmm, that shade of orange says Chalet (Canadian glass made by people from Murano) to me.  ::) What say the experts?

Hi Carolyn

Thanks for your comment :)

I have had a look at Chalet glass (although I haven't found many good sites) and so far I can't find anything that looks similar.  I haven't seen any Chalet glass with the two colour sommerso effect, or with the very solid base.  Most of the Chalet glass I have seen seems to have a more lobed effect to the base, but maybe I just haven't seen the right ones?

I did wonder as well about it being uranium glass, as the Chalet glass started (as far as I can find out) in the 50's, so wasn't that too late to be using the uranium glass?

I don't really know enough to comment, so I hope nothing I have put here appears silly to people with more knowledge!

Thanks

Janet

More likely Murano orangey red - I think the orange is a trick of the light. I've seen that red on Murano stuff and they used uranium (and still do). I don't think they stopped using it, but rather started using it later than other countries.

Thanks for your comments

Up against the light it is a very definite orange, almost tangerine, with a separate band of yellow underneath. I would say the photo is reasonably true to the correct colour.  Does the orange colour exclude it from being Murano?

How about the different layers of colour? Did only Murano glassmakers do that?

What sort of date do you think we are looking at?  I was thinking 50's?

I am going to put this up for sale, but I have no idea how to describe it or how to price it

I would say Murano and its double sommerso and uranium - all points in its selling favour. Date 50s, 60s, 70, 80s - could be anything. Value, good probably but the postage is going to be high so that will reduce the selling price

Sommerso techniques where (and still are) used elsewhere: in Czech glass, Swedish glass, Polish glass...

Hi Thanks for that - at least I know what to write on the label now :)

I don't do ebay, I have a small cabinet in an antiques centre - very small scale but I do like to research and be as accurate as I can with my labelling.

This is really the first piece of Murano I have tried to sell, so when you say good priced, I don't know what that means, I'm afraid.

I was thinking of putting it in at about £45, does that seem outrageously priced either way?  I also have a Murano sommerso vase I bought at the same auction (see separate thread), which I am going to price up at £26, so if either of these prices seem way out please tell me :)

thanks
Janet
