Title: glass links
Post by: krsilber on April 07, 2008, 07:05:59 AM
I'm not sure this is the proper place to post these, but here goes.  These are non-commercial, informative sites I thought might interest people.  I'm sure many of you have seen many of them, but maybe there are a couple new ones you like.  'Tis but a smattering of those I have saved, but I tried to choose general ones that some folks might not have already.

Pages about glassmaking, chemistry, history, etc.

general glassmaking and history
http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Glass

glassmaking page focusing on bottles, but has lots of general info, too
http://www.sha.org/bottle/glassmaking.htm

Corning Museum of Glass glassmaking videos
http://www.cmog.org/index.asp?pageId=1565

some interesting glass patents; rest of site worth exploring, too

Glossaries and Glass Marks

Extensive (but not alphabetized) glass glossary (just found this today; it’s posted in another thread):
http://www.museumoflondonarchaeology.org.uk/NR/rdonlyres/FCBB7609-4C5A-48A1-9082-F42EBA062F4B/0/post92molglass_glos.pdf

Lots of glass marks, maybe half of which are American.

Museum Collections – first three have large online databases of images you can browse and search.

Books Online

Libbey glass book online (most of it).  Lots of old images of glassmaking, cutting, and machines (including a great one of a light bulb blowing machine)

Reminiscences of Glassmaking, by Deming Jarves

I try again to correct butchiedogs' list:

STS Zagreb with wineglass in front of a 5 star is NOT German, but formerly Jugoslavia.

Sachsenglas SG in a crown is RADEBERG

a heart shaped SG  or AWS is August Walther in Ottendorf/Okrilla Saxonia

none of these are Schwepnitz!

positively identified your Edelweiss as Max Malky
and Streit Rittermarke

BTW Anne, your links page is great!  That's been one of my bookmarked sites for a while, but I didn't connect it with you until just now.

I'll drop Mike a line about the corrections.

Thanks Kristi, :)  it's a work in progress and I have around another 1000 glass bookmarked sites to add when I have some spare time. ;)
